Given that few people here say that it is not difficult to tell, I would like to know how it is possible to know that an employee is probably targeted for surplus? I had a colleague who was surplussed, for whom probably no one, not even he, could have thought that he would be the target.

We was told we was safe. Everyone in my group was happy. Our boss just keeps on defending us, telling Stankey we are very important and essential to the company.
This is at&t, dying a slow death. Expect continued layoffs, more deteriorating bennies, low raises and bonuses. The walls are closing in, not to mention the $135B of debt.
It's a popularity contest
Do you have a T badge?
Well, then you are in line for a layoff.
use eye contact, eyes don’t lie
Bottom line with AT&T is if you have no hook within the company, that is if you don't know anybody of influence or you don't come from a long line of AT&T employees within your family, you're a target! It's not what you know or how well you work, it's all about who you know! Been with this company too long and have seen it many times first hand! I was never passed over for a promotion or even cared to be in management, but know very well how the T system works and it's not pretty nor is it fair!
If you're the person in your group that people can't find. Don't attend team meetings. "Where's Pete? Dunno, he accepted the meeting invite though...??" Continually MIA. People go to your Boss because they can't get a hold of you, can't get an email response, or phone call returned. Out sick or with other issues far more than others on your team.
If you're that guy (and I suspect some of you are). Buh-Bye.
When I managed people I always made sure to document this as an issue with the offenders.
That way there was no question as to who would be going when the time came.
If you are reading this you’re fired.
“ I put in 620 hours "unpaid overtime" this past year.” When will you folks learn it’s not worth it. Nothing we’re doing matters in the end. All you really have is time and only so much of it. Don’t waste it on a job. Just put in 40 and call it a day unless you can make overtime. I know people who work all this extra time and they are miserable. I would rather be a quiet quitter than miserable for a company who doesn’t give two sh--s about laying you off on a whim.
There is one easy question to answer to determine if you are targeted:
"Are you an AT&T employee?"
How does one know if they are a ringer?
I put in 620 hours "unpaid overtime" this past year. Dropped down a notch from "exceeds". Manager is covering for her buddies. No higher level management says a word. Integrity no longer exists at the Death Star.
If you've got a bullseye on yer back, you're a target!
To the zi-------d that uses the word “ringer” in all of these posts…why do you keep using that word incorrectly ?
age and length of service are the first criteria. after 50 years old you have a target on your back.
then they will take you away from the work that you have gotten accolades for and give you a manager who has kissed bu-t his/her whole life and couldn't manage their way of a wet paper bag.
att is so transparent and such a loser company. only a matter of time.
".......Ask me how I know…."
How do you know?
If you are a Debbie downer and constantly complain or otherwise have a bad attitude, don’t get along, call leadership ideas stupid, etc, you are on the chopping block regardless how smart you are or how much work you do.
Rank and yank. In managerial positions, staff members know where they are ranked because performance objectives and attainment goals are routinely discussed. The lower your performance, the greater visibility you have to getting yanked. However, even in spite of that, the business will routinely adjust their need to eliminate additional headcount and anyone could be on the chopping block; even high performers…..It’s a numbers game. And seniority, as well as performance, typically does not factor into the eliminations. Your VP gets a number and it gets passed down to his/her/teams. Ask me how I know….
One might not know.
We all know about Not Meet, Meets, Exceeds etc. Those terms change from time to time.
Obviously, if you are Not Meets or Exceeds, you better know where you stand.
Those middle ratings, that is where it counts. I was never once told where I was ranked. Over the years, I got several progressions, so at least some of those years I must have been more highly ranked.
For 1st/2nd levels, your Associate Director and his peers will have a meeting with their boss, Director/Executive Director or AVP, depending on what you have.
During that call, the employees under that chain of command will be ranked. You will be ranked with the other employees of the same title or same level.
That ranking, is at least one of the factors that determines if you might make it to the chopping block. Sometimes it is that simple, other times might be a bit more complex.
Just because your ranking is low, it still needs to pass HR and Legal, to ensure compliance with discrimination laws.
My first two layoff were out of blue. They cut heads and closed the shop while very busy.
The third time seen it coming 3 months out. They moved another group to a 2nd level out of state, an Corey Anthony paid us a visit a few months eariler and sail we were in a small circle.
NO ONE IS SAFE!
If you are a ringer, you are a direct target for layoff.
Companies, including T, are sick and tired of the ringers getting a free ride. The ringers will be rooted out and laid off.
The number of years you have is an indicator. They want to get rid of big pensions.
Unless your are someone on a pip etc you will not know.
union folk are bargained for and is based on seniority. but i think the laziest fat people have abused this privelege and just dont carry their part of the workload. in turn giving union folks a bad name as being lazy. Wish they would fire union members that abuse the system because there are hardworking union members out here.
Are you currently working or twiddling thumbs? That’s your indicator.
