Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Here we go again

Now they are laying off entire groups. Targeting lower management. These are the folks who are constantly taking on more work. First call is for those at risk & second call was safe call, as it always has been. They even pulled the safe folks in the meeting room with those not safe. Told to keep working. Survey to stay or go. In 3 weeks those chosen to go, will be notified. This one will be a blood bath. No remorse shown, during mtg call notification & after script read call disconnected. It will be interesting if they expect a transition of work for those selected. This is how devoted employees are now treated.

Yep after 23 years I got the lovely email but at 64 years of age (I'm not eligible for full SSN benefits until 66yrs 7 months) so even taking early retirement this will cost me thousands in retirement benefits,

I am 60 and planning to leave soon. Can you elaborate what the thousands in retirement benefits that you will lose are? You don’t have to take SS early. In fact in most cases you should delay this as long as possible.

That means managers with a skill set in that field are pinned to be contingency workers to scab and keep things moving. Most of those folks come from the surplus group. So by laying off these managers, T is literally surplussing workers they have selected to temporarily replace striking workers.

This is not entirely true. My experience is that managers (no skills required) are mandated to take a bunch of specialized training for the position they are expected to hold during a strike. In my case and all others that I know no existing skills aligned with the strike duty.

Unbelievable how people still have faith in Union. Union is a business and been in bed with the company for at least a decade.
They golf together.
Union doesn’t have the manpower they use to have 10 years ago, wire techs are not core they don’t get the same benefits except the pay increase, they don’t have much to fight for like CORE.
Anyway this is how Union work. Company make a proposal that sucks, upset techs. Union start dancing with company and make statements like “proposal was ridiculous and unacceptable” after few rounds company move numbers around like give you $2 more in pay and increase your health plan by $4.
Union say we’ve got them we are United and BS and we made T bend over.
Smart people will do a quick math and see that you actually make less money than last year because of health insurance cost plus inflation/cost of living.
Union should be a group of lawyers you hire every 4 years to Negotiate the contract and F off.

"the Black CWA contract area" what does this even mean?

This is not a racial thing. The Mobility teams have multiple contracts for different unions, so they each also have a color code: Blue, Green, Purple, Orange, Black, and Yellow. Mobility Black is CWA District 3.

@radioscottie Learn to use google… don’t deal with labor much eh?

The whole southeast region’s CWA contract is up next month and big T thinks they are going to strike. That means managers with a skill set in that field are pinned to be contingency workers to scab and keep things moving. Most of those folks come from the surplus group. So by laying off these managers, T is literally surplussing workers they have selected to temporarily replace striking workers. Just another example of leaders not knowing what is going on in their own company.
The contract colors are referred to by their jacket colors. NE is orange. south is black etc.

At&t has a track record of re-hiring ex-employees at a reduced pay scale. Once you leave the lateral pay is out the door and they can start you back at the bottom. I know someone that was let go in 2020 and got a job back with company in another position 1 year later with the same title they left with but different job. They were at 85% of top pay when they were laid off and rehired at 15%. They were lucky to get their seniority eventually bridged in. So the company got them back at 70% reduce pay and their pension was no longer available.

In the past they would let too many people go and have to rehire, this way the save money by resetting your pay and benefits and get skilled people that can hit the ground running. Now with that said the business may be pivoting to a different technology...

Good luck to all.. There is life after AT&T. No experience coming up with any new hires, it will be to late for them to figure it out. In the next few years AI will process most of the work anyways. Enjoy your life, that is what was intended for you, not to be treated like this.

Was there a meeting today or are you referring to one the other day when many others had theirs?

If today, which AVP?

Three weeks… should be fantastic timing when those managers would be assigned to cover a strike in the Black CWA contract area. The ivory tower peeps have no idea what is going on and who is actually keeping the company going. Hilarious
I’m just done with it all. Walk my happy a-s to the door John Stinky.

There will no work transition for those impacted, just eliminating the work is the goal this round.
