Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

Centene filed WARN for Dec layoffs.

Centene issued a WARN notice on October 20, 2025, with a layoff date of December 19, 2025, for Centene Management Company, LLC. While the specific locations and roles are not yet detailed, the notice is part of a larger trend of workforce reduction in the health insurance sector due to factors like shifting government healthcare policies and changing market conditions.
Notice Issued: October 20, 2025.
Layoff Date: December 19, 2025.
Company: Centene Management Company, LLC.
Affected Employees: The notice is for a mass layoff and closings, and more specific details are expected to be released later.
Context: This is part of a broader trend in the health insurance industry.
Factors contributing to the layoff include changes in government policies, particularly with the end of pandemic-era Medicaid regulations, and market shifts, according to this YouTube video.
Other recent news includes Centene withdrawing its 2025 guidance in July 2025 due to market conditions, as seen in this press release from Centene's investor relations site.

@zI was laid off in September from Centene - Buckeye Health Plan and looking for a new job, I was hoping I could find a new job with Centene. If the ship is sinking I wish they would say that to prospective job seekers instead of telling us job seekers that they found someone with better qualifications. We are the better qualified.

@199 Lost a contract. Leaving 3 CMs on a team. Lost all the opt OUT members only keeping the opt in. they are losing up to 10,000 members. Anyone who is opt out will automatically go to someone else. Irresponsible. Could have been avoided.

@jd I didn’t see anything specifically mentioning RIFs in the UBS transcript. However, margins over membership seems to be the mantra for 2026. Additionally, they are expecting anywhere from the teens to mid to upper 30 percent loss in ACA marketplace membership. Medicaid is obviously under pressure. You can probably read between the lines here.

They filed October 20, 2025. We shall see what happens. Hope they’re more transparent about it instead of finding out about layoffs when it’s leaked to the press.

They are still in the process of laying off staff in the Appeals Dept. and in the Health Plans. I was told that this last wave will have term dates in early Jan. As for the WARN notice, I only saw it for 5 employees because they are closing the Cordova, CA office. There might be other layoffs in areas due to FL Medicaid too.

Given that Centene did not secure the FL Medicaid contract (which is a HUGE part of their revenue stream), I am sure there will be reorgs. RIFs, lay-offs - whatever label you want to give it, on the very near horizon. So it really doesn't matter at this point about the WARN ACT since they always found a way to get around it in the past. Having so many people in different states working in states outside the one they reside makes it that much easier for them to lay people off.

Anyone hear any rumblings about RIF from the UBS Global Healthcare Conference 2025 yesterday?

@gc I believe it was due to a permanent closure at that location. But could be wrong.

Weird - they are not required to file a WARN notice for just 5 employees in one state. The federal WARN Act requires employers with 100 or more employees to provide 60 days' advance written notice for a plant closing or mass layoff that affects at least 50 employees. Something is off and seems shady.

The only one I see with those dates is for California, 5 employees: https://data.news-press.com/see-which-companies-announced-mass-layoffs-closings/?query=Centene
