Is my memory correct in that they said they had some sort of evidence against the company and they were going to expose them unless they met their demands?

Pepperidge Farm remembers! Between the original email going to all, and all of the "reply all" emails going out (most complaining that they didn't understand why they were getting the email, or telling others to stop replying all), they had to shut down the email system, until they could get a filter set up to quash the ever-expanding thread.
