Keep thinking that HY cares if you're useful. Unless you're in India, you aren't.
The Tech Lead who I know of that was remote and let go was long overdue. His actual usefulness expired 2+ years ago. Since then he was nothing but a self-proclaimed martyr and like a diaper rash that wouldn't go away.
Thankfully HR has fixed the glitch. Going out old and angry isn't really becoming of anyone but hey, you do you.

I myself was in tech and got let go a few months ago (not even remote).
It never happened- the troll is just very jealous of remote workers and tries to get this rumor going all the time.
