Even if nothing comes of it, spending my evening looking and applying for a new job made me feel like I was taking some control of the situation.

Just remember you should be applying for external roles every 3-6 months or so regardless of how happy or stable you are at your current job. If for no other reason, to assess what the current job market thinks you're worth and to keep your interview skills sharp.
