Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

The wfh ask is convenient

I find the ask to wfh next week really icky. What happened to all that talk about connection and collaboration? These are layoffs. There are real people that are going to be affected. Not just another headline.

@OP I was here for the 2015 RIF and I personally got laid off this summer. Trust me when I say you would rather have this done in small groups over zoom than how they did it in 2015. People effected in 2015 are still dealing with the trauma of being laid off in a conference room with 100’s of other people. If you are on zoom you can turn off the camera if you need to and then process the news privacy of your own home vs media chasing you down on the way to your car.

Having been through the last big RIF, I’m glad we’re not coming in next week. News crews and photographers were on the street as laid off team members were leaving with their boxes while crying. Imagine having to walk to your car at Orchestra Hall after having been laid off while some je-k from WCCO records you crying and struggling with your boxed up desk for the 5:00 news. At least all of us can have some privacy. This is hard on everyone.

I have heard it’s for safety too. Unfortunately in this day and age you can’t be too careful. They don’t want disgruntled and highly emotional employees retaliating, acting out, being revengeful, or trashing the office. The layoffs will hit the news regardless of if they have photos or not. What would make it worse though is if people were getting hurt, defacing property, or became unsafe due to this situation.

it's so they can pack up people's stuff without anyone knowing who actually was laid off unless they are told. They don't want anyone at the office all week not just tuesday.

I believe its more of a chance for crews to come in and move areas/cubes around in the office to prepare for return to office.

@a3 my understanding is they don’t want the press there seeing ppl leave in tears with their boxes. Ppl said that happened at the last major layoff and made the publicity worse. Kinda weak of them to cop out like this

@a3 in a way, yes. Certainly not for the person being laid off, but for everyone else, yes. I’ve seen this firsthand, albeit much further back in my career, and it absolutely affected the way that I treated people as a leader, and just generally.

You have to look someone in the eye humanity is a lot different.

Do you really want everyone in the office while a select few get called into a room, only to leave in tears after being laid off?
