Thread regarding Elevance Health (Anthem) layoffs

Massive Insecurity or do they really want us to quit?

Over the past 2 weeks I have been flooded with messages and calls from past co workers sharing how miserable they are - they are called on the carpet for the smallest of infractions, reports are apparently run endlessly and if your metric is "off" no matter the reason, no matter the amount by 3 or 5 - you are contacted by the manager or with the tag along director who could never do the job and never has - to remind you what a loser you are, you need to get in line, formal warnings are next or have been submitted - and you are being put on notice. You are being watched. It's not what you do for a member its' all about the bean counts, the back seat driving, the frank disrespect. They ask me what to do - is that why I left? I tell them the truth - yes! it's the leadership, it's the selective punishing, get out if you can.
Every day I am reminded I did the right thing - I would rather pour beer for a living or cut grass then ever come back or encourage anyone to apply there

What is interesting is the escalation of this behavior towards employees right around the time budget projections for merit and AIP are on the horizon - and clearly more RIF are coming - writing is PAINTED ON THE WALL - AIP will be gone or might as well be and if you get more than 2% you are the outlier.

@k2 I could not agree more in sending an email- your manager who told you to swipe and leave will LIE if pushed about it - reports will be run. You need to think a step ahead

Do they want you to quit ? Not necessarily, they want you to do the work of at least 3 FTE’s, work with no or conflicting instructions, question nothing, cheerfully accept everything including cr-p bonuses/increases and be okay watching people who do less or know less than you be promoted/rewarded. Do they care if you quit? Not at all, they believe they’ll be able to replace you with someone cheaper or with AI.

@f8 it’s funny when someone thinks they know if a senior leader is a low performer. You may think they su-k (and maybe they do) but you literally have no clue as to what their performance review looks like.

@g5 I have to say if I had a manager who said - Same manager told me just to swipe my badge and leave to meet hybrid requirement

I would send that id--t an email saying "to confirm your instructions I will be swiping my badge and leaving to meet the hybrid requirements as instructed" - I would send it to my personal email and print it - the id--t has a problem - lets involve HR. Yes I am that kinda person.

No 1:1's would get an email ( same process as above) "we haven't met individually or had a formalized 1:1 since x-x - when will that be scheduled?"

Try and fire me -I will take the id--t with me - people need to learn how to deal with these "people leaders"

Wtf is that.

@fy well that’s assuming “people leaders” actually know how to be “people leaders”. I’ve had managers here that don’t want to have 1:1’s and spend most of their day yellow on Teams. Same manager told me just to swipe my badge and leave to meet hybrid requirement. Basically a lot of su-ky managers who put names on riff lists without actually interacting with the people they are managing.

you know how to decrease your RIF chances - meet standards, learn "that sounds great, I agree, sounds good to me" , keep your mouth shut - during your 1:1 ask " do you have any suggestions for me for continued improvement since we last talked" - be prepared to say one thing about yourself that you have identified "you could improve/do better". Thanks for your time, this has been very insightful, helpful, etc.

They are not interested in your opinion -they are interested in your obedience and your "happy to be here", attitude. If you want to get ahead look for another job somewhere else - it may not reveal itself now but you should always be looking. Trust no one - that ship has sailed.

@f9 In other words, managers be careful who you cut. It may be your own neck if you choose poorly.

They really want remote employees to quit. Have you seen job postings lately? They basically say only hybrid employees will be considered for positions. Translation, this company is a dead end for talent that happens to be remote. Unless, you want to relocate on your own expense.

@f8 I don’t disagree. What I’m saying is the riffs were a good way to get rid of low performers without the paperwork of performance improvement plans. But since they have cut so deeply for the past 2 years there are very few low performers left and now they are left with riffing people who perform well. Also we know insecure managers get rid of people they simply do not like despite the person being a high performer. So it was easy to riff low performers at the beginning of the riffs 2 years ago. Now they have to start finding new and creative ways to justify riffing the high performers by changing the guide posts whenever they want.

@bg I do not agree that all low performers have been rift. I might be misinterpreting what you have said. But I see a lot of low performers that have not been rift. A lot of low performers that are in senior positions and many high performers with lots of experience that have been rift.

It’s a miserable existence here with no accountable leadership.

I think they are worried about being riffed so are trying to show their value in misguided ways. All the “ low performers” have been riffed so they are dreaming up ways to justify putting people on the riff list and trying to justify it.

Thank you for the reminder of why I don’t ever want to work for this company again. Corrupt leadership who constantly hound employees to do more with less. Never mind that your manager has never done the job and couldn’t.
