I've got so few things to do that I’m mostly standing around waiting for work. I went from being overworked to this within a month, which is how I know it's not an accident. Has anybody else been in a similar position? What can I expect?

Two things are true here.
The company has no idea what it is doing. This means you may just be overlooked.
The company is firing people.
It is either one of these or both. Either way, I hope for you the best!
@OP do you feel comfortable sharing what function you are in? Trying to figure out if there are any tell tale signs for certain functions …
I've had friends in your position and all you can do is brush up on technical skills, resume, interview prep. If they were going to fire you, you'd be on a PIP already. But you could be laid off at anytime, but at least you'd get severance.
I hope it all works out for you.
Just curious, was any time put on your calendar by HR?
