Thread regarding Imperial Oil Limited layoffs

Say Yes!

Everyone should say yes to relocation and make the decision more difficult for management. This could also help boost your severance when you show a willingness to relocate but the company decides to separate you.

@qp all the big companies have a risk matrix. Its not just an Imperial/Exxon thing.

They also all have people that know how to objectively assess risk and people who have zero clue.

Its not a perfect system but its a good tool to align assessment of risk for decision making. Focus should be on training how to objectively assess risk at all organizations but its always a gap.

@jm Ah yes, the sacred risk matrix! One quintile higher than the magic eight ball!

@cz Imperial has thought this through with relocation surveys, working notice, etc.

Not sure if you have ever been in a risk assessment with legal, but they estimate how many people are impacted, what the odds are of being sued, what notice or severance is the minimum to reduce the legal risk.

Then they present those to management to decide.

Agree. Even if you really don’t want to move, saying yes in the short term buys some time to figure out the market and options- we can always see what is offered in January and turn it down if there are better options elsewhere. Alternatively if there are no better options, we can at least accept a new position short term for continued employment with IOL, while looking to switch companies in the long term.

Sc--w the company and their long term goals of squeezing blood from a stone. $10 says in a few years there’s another round of layoffs anyway or we’re sold off. We have to do what’s right for us and our families. Management encouraging us to only say we’re mobile if we really want to move and stay with the company long-term is laughable.

You don’t know what the offer will be so it’s unreasonable to assume that by saying you are mobile you will accept anything. Your lawyer doesn’t know what he is talking about or you misheard,

@OP could backfire if you say yes to mobility with no intention of accepting an offer . If you say yes , then turn down a comparable position to what you hold now - significantly reduces negotiating leverage in a severance dispute . Heard this advice directly from my lawyer .
