Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Timeline for SR folks??

Realistically when do SR folks need to commit to Houston by? I’m hearing conflicting information and for those of us in California, it’s extremely anxiety-inducing. Someone pls advise/help; been a really tough time with all the smokescreens and pump fakes. TIA 🙏🏿

The 3 months window for IT is absurd. What’s other team like?

@b9 Move to Houston only if you want to move out of CA, and like Houston better, and is willing to switch to new opportunities that survive or utilize AI. Schools here are good, so also the morality and common senses. Houses are big and beautiful with taste (not necessary the quality sometime since CA does have higher standards), but no convenience for outdoor activities, parks are only in certain areas, no side walk in most of communities, so outdoor walking is limited, and roads are outdated and not clean like San Ramon, but if you can compromise quality and are satisfied with indoor from June to Sep, and especially if you like layback, slow pace, quietness, leaving CA and its crazier atmosphere might not be a bad choice.

Originally, I thought they said there will be atleast 1 year moving period after relocation date is finalized. I guess the listed job location in waved 1 and 2 re-org job post was it.

The Bay area has a robust economy and I know about a dozen different Chevron employees over the years who have bailed out for other jobs. Most changed industries. Some went to academia or to research. All are 100% happy with the move and no longer dealing with the uncertainty of the Houston threats. Luckily, most SR jobs are easily found in other employers: legal, HR, IT, finance, planning, admin, etc.

So if you’re in SR you’re just cooked?? What if you don’t wanna move? Till when can you finesse them by? Is it legally binding?? Pls help I’m stressin

@e1 That’s right- do what you need to do. There are no guarantees with at will employment. People who had 30 years loyalty were kicked out with 2 weeks notice. They weren’t hostile and was no fault of their own Company is not looking out for you and they lie numerous times. They are looking out for themselves. Look out for yourself. There is no loyalty anymore

I agree with you on the job market opportunities. I am thinking about taking chemistry classes so I can manufacture black market products. 😳😇😂

@e3 before you criticize you need to recognize that THEY lied to US first. When MW came to Lakeside over a year ago and told us the timing of the moves it was a different message with a promise to give us the updated timing later, which never materialized until presumably next month and with a much more accelerated timeline. If they don’t give a fu-k about us why would we give a fu-k about being totally transparent? Integrity doesn’t get you sh-t in this company anymore. That’s your FAFO!

@e1 no judgment here whatsoever. The company made it clear they’re looking out for number 1 first, so that’s fair play in response. Most SR people I talk to are planning to leave before moving, so you’re not alone. Good luck in the hunt.

@e1 Desperate time call for desperate measures? Life gets hard and you lie to avoid making a decision? Can I subscribe to your newsletter?

@e1 AW is a liar. FAFO

AW basically told us that nobody’s going to be forced to move to Houston before mid-2026. Then it’s up to the various LTs to decide when each group will move. Said that at the LATEST we’ll need to begin showing up at Hou office 4 days/wk by Jan 1, 2028. I am hoping that our group lets us stay at Lakeside until then.

And to the person saying that we sought for and got a Hou job, so basically what did we expect (we signed up for this), I hear what you’re saying. Desperate times call for a little bit of lying by omission. Yeah, I posted for a Hou job, to buy me some time and hopefully find another job in the Bay Area. Moving to Hou will be a huge life disruption for my family. My spouse will need to find another job. Were people with lives and connections here in the Bay Area. I signed up for a job here when I joined this company, but the company changed the cards on the table. So now I am only looking out for me and my family.

Did you apply and get a job that was posted as located in Houston? Surprise, you've committed.

@a5 Not just ENGINE… Manila & BA too. All much cheaper than Houston. BK told us awhile ago that they’ll be offshoring for the next 3 years. You can see the pattern. Plus, offshoring is the biggest buzzword next to AI. Companies are using AI as an excuse to layoff in the US and move those jobs offshore

@OP They probably won’t tell us until managers start asking when we are going to move. Does starting the relocation process mean we are committing or is there something else that would commit us?

You probably have until Summer 2026 to be in San Ramon. They know they need to factor in the school year for those who have children. If you are unable to find a job and have to go to Houston get a small apartment and put your Bay Area stuff in storage. If you have family and need to keep job leave them behind for a bit to not disrupt their lives while you look for a better job. Moving to Houston for a position that will be no more than 5 years makes no sense. Best of luck to you.

@a1 I think the rehire positions will be in the "Engine", not Houston. Houston is filling up with MSP contractors these days.

As someone who got out as soon as I could see the writing on the wall, I advise you to look for another job. They are going to string you along as long as possible because they would rather you quit and they rehire a Houston based person.
