Why did CP announce layoffs the better part of a year before it was scheduled to happen?
Answer: To create a culture of fear to squeeze harder work and backstabbing from its employees. An employee in deep fear is a desperate employee, especially in times of industry decline, and many will do anything to keep their job, to include going the extra mile to make co-workers look bad.

On my floor in SP1 there is a lot of puzzling going on in the kitchen. You would think now isn't a great time to be perceived not working, but some have thrown caution to the wind and spend 15-45 minutes at a time working on a puzzle. Talent selection has already occurred or at least the decision in people's minds, but pinball machines and puzzles shouldn't be on your priority list at any point during the day while on company time.

@OP the field personal is dog hit in the Delaware Basin! Laziest people I’ve ever seen in the oil field lol. Never seen so much incompetence in my life. Bringing people that have no idea how to make money/ run operations…yeah you need to chop some heads in the field. Zero accountability for making 0 profits. Plus the amount of embezzlement is disgusting. COP Permian better get the head sc--wed on and quit playing nice. These dudes have taken COP for a fuking ride. Really sad to see a company that tried to take care of people in the field get taken advantage of.

Any professional who doesn’t have at least 1 year of emergency funds has not been responsible to their family. Now there are exceptions, but as a general rule you need that type of emergency funds to ride out a lay-off. Also controlling the costs by eliminating the maid service, the gardener, the online subscriptions, and all charity. Fill your own coffee pods if you have to. And no vacations to Disney or other places at spring break. Instead have the kids stay home and play like in the old days. And for Christ sake cut down on the gifts at Christmas. No more hamburgers either at restaurants or at home. Stick with chicken. No top shelf liq-or. Stick with low quality and just mix it with water or diet soda. Turn the temperature up or down to minimize energy use. In general start running your life like a business trying to save money.

@a8 our ceo vastly over estimated the “culture” when he said culture beats everything in the townhall. I would cite the posts related to the Alaska letter as a prime example.

Maybe, but the announcement came at time when the oil business was in the tank. There are very few jobs available for CP employees. Guys with wife and kids can go into full panic mode when the big CP$ stops and there is no place to go. This is not the time to get lazy at CP.

Squeeze harder work out of the employees? Haha that’s laughable, everyone’s $&?”&s are all given and people are checked out. Why do anything but the absolute bare minimum when the place is in turmoil and tomorrow is a massive question mark. A master class in how to ki-l workforce productivity is on display here.

Backstabbing is a cultural and would not happen in every company. Likely they announced it to get employees to self disconnect from the country. Kind of like self deportation.
