Thread regarding Imperial Oil Limited layoffs

I feel sick to my stomach after today

I need this job. My family relies on me. I can't afford to lose it right now. The fact that I have a one in five chance to be laid off is nauseating. And to think this is all because they don't care about us and want to replace us with cheaper workers overseas. I just hope they realize sooner rather than later that cheaper is cheaper for a reason.

What we can do is channel the wonderful lives of our brave Executives and Shareholders. They are truly wonderful humans, exotic cars, multiple homes, trust funds. These are amazing people and we need to do everything in our power to elevate their position in this world even if it means sacrificing our own livelihoods. Close your eyes and imagine you are one of them, all will be well.

@cj The situation right now is different. There are not too many positions available out there these days in O&G. Giant companies are all cutting headcount.

I was separated from EMIT in 2020, it turned out not to bad in my situation. Pocketed a sizeable severance and landed another job within a month, bumped salary by 30%, cashed out pension to a LIRA account while interest rate was historical low, increased LIRA valuation by 100% in the last 5 years. A door closes, but a window might open. Be ready to step out your comfort zone, a better life might be there waiting for you.

Unfortunately, things are out of our hands right now. I have been updating my resume, and got some emails drafted up to reach out to my industry network tomorrow morning, I encourage you to do the same. At this point, I think you should start preparing for the worst and think about relocation or taking the severance. Get in touch, if needed, with an employment lawyer tomorrow once you hear more info.
Wishing you all the best, keep in touch with your coworkers.
Good luck, you are not alone.

they did a similar cruel layoff, replacing Calgary roles with India and Argentina jobs back in 2020... half of EMIT was wiped out at that time...and other departments were impacted too...
we should see this coming,..when they "donated" the labs to SAIT... the winter in coming (Game of Thrones)

It may not seem like it now but this company didn’t deserve you. You will do far better so stay focused on your family and find the right path. All works out in the end.
