Thread regarding Texas Instruments Inc. layoffs

Explanations?

Hey guys, can someone explain what's going on, even from rumors:

  • Why the downsize
  • Rough number on the downsize (5% now, 5% in Q4?)
  • This appears to be worldwide
  • What does India have to do with any of this?

I'm grateful to still have my role, but I'm terrible at being "in the know" of the bigger picture my company faces. For the sake of discussion, I like my role but people keep saying to steer clear of working at TI. What are reasons for this train of thought?

Thank y'all!

@a2 It’s almost same cost to get a project done in India vs US. Unfortunately, TI business folks are blindly focused on employee salaries for comparison and keep repeating same BS of hiring being cheaper in India as they lack critical thinking abilities in general.

Bombay Instruments instead of Texas Instruments. Rumor is the plan is to send design, r&d, and business divisions to India. Not only is labor cheaper but our CEO & VPs think Engineering is better over there. Ridiculous, imo.

@a2 That's a fair point. My eyes don't scale that far up the ladder during my work (in APP, btw). I don't pay close enough attention to these things because I have work to do y'know? I can't imagine what would cause these upper managers to bail, and sincerely appreciate your insight. My jobs about to get heavier with a smaller team at that.

@a3 I've only been told that we had to let go of another team member and that's all I heard. My team stays very "politically correct" and doesn't talk openly about most of these things. My boss wouldn't be the one I'd go to for these, but I'm not close enough to any other higher ups to get a better judgement.

Has your boss talked to you at all about any of these things?

Simply put, it is much cheaper to hire an engineer in India vs the US. Our jobs are being outsourced.

And I would honestly tell everyone to steer clear of TI right now. At least in APP, it's been very telling seeing a lot of upper managers willingly leave the company over the past few weeks/months. These upper managers were more tuned in with what Haviv and the VPs had planned, and they jumped ship. What does that tell you?
