Thread regarding HCSC (Health Care Service Corporation) layoffs

Just got let go by HCSC this morning

FYI: was told we were all safe and bonuses might be impacted, but today was let go. Know of at least 10 others, all from COO's part of the organization.

The unfortunate fact of the matter is most areas are over staffed right now. We are losing members in lines of business that keep us afloat.

RIF’s su-k, but look around. Automation and innovation never results in more people. Plus we’ve stayed in a cycle of getting top heavy every five years, then purging.

@bs Not sure about developers and testers, but hcsc is very thin with FE developers and testers. The model after the previous two rifs, was for a SMALL staff of devs, BUT augmented with contractors. I guess they could rif devs, but they will need to rehire replacements or very little will get done on the IT side. They could hire more contractors to replace the FE, but that has been tried before and it wasn't ideal. idk, but whatever..

@OP again would be nice if some people took a pay cut instead of sticking it to the people below them. Imagine the reaction? We might even be able to legitimately win the award for best place to work.

@OP did they tell you that this week or are you referring to conversations at the employee meetings?

@bp yes according to the updated policy shared last year if you worked until December 31st and was then let go you get a bonus regardless of if you left or were let go

@bk 3 months? HCSC deadline in 10/01. Just in time to NOT pay bonus.

@bg I hate that it happened 3 months before bonus deadline. Wasted so much effort in this company for 9 months only to be let go and then not qualify for the bonus.

For the people that were let go - did you receive a severance and if so, how much was it for (i.e. one months pay per year employed, etc.)?

@ag they’re not contractually obligated to not lay off conveying Cigna employees, just honor Cigna’s pay and severance, etc for the first 12 months.

@bc The same thing happened in 2019. I am surprised it lasted this long for a major RIF to take place. I guess it's better than what used to be a 2-3 year cycle.

Sorry for everyone who were impacted today.
People I closely worked with were part of this RIF. I believe performance is not the factor. Head count reduction with whatever target the C's have in mind.
Impacted so far

  • Employees on both side - HCSC + Cigna conveyed
  • IT + Business
  • Sr IC to VP - across the board. Typically in a continuous wave, they cut by payer here across the board in 2 days so I hope rest of the folks are safe for now.
Not a good time to search for a job.
    GOOD LUCK, y'all.

@b8 that’s 100% one hand not talking to the other. We just wrapped up a AFSP fundraiser last week in our office.

Is it any coincidence that HCSC sends out a Su----e Prevention e-mail to all it's members the same afternoon that they cut staff?

@af You're not seeing HCSC as it should be. You're seeing HCSC trying to deal with the merger. My team went form 14 people delivering 100+ projects every year to 4 people delivering 7 since September 2024.
The entire ecosystem, and culture, is gutted right now.

@b4 who's the VP in CS who got axed?

Looks like another flat staff reduction directive to me. These seem to happen every few years. Typically starts Director up to DVP and goes through a few passes. I'm seeing multiple roles in that job range as well as some Consultants and Sr Managers. All across multiple teams for both HCSC and Cigna. In my experience performance and tenure aren't usually factors when this happens, it's just a numbers game to hit the reduction target.
Sorry to those impacted.

@b3 2 people in network management have been let go. Network management consultant, Internal network rep, a VP of Customer service, and a manager of product development, VP in NBS. So it is across the board, not just certain levels.
