Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

I cant take this anymore

Year after year, month after month..I'm having to constantly hear through my manager and from peers that the group I'm in will just shut down. The 'leadership' above us seems to think that the automation that is used in conjunction to our work just 'does what do and there's no need for us', when we pointed out time and time again the instances showing how flawed the automation is, and why the need for human intervention is valid and needed otherwise other groups would be impacted with no one there to catch and fix these issues. Our group is just a very small team of individuals and It's shear ignorance for anyone to think this automation is just 'set it and forget it'.

I dont know what to do anymore, im tired of having to be reminded constantly that we're probably done for...despite hearing this now for a LONG time. It's making me physically sick and I dont know what the point is in me busting my a$$ or giving my all when I feel like im not even wanted.

I ask of those who are in a similar situation for any helpful advice, please no sarcastic responses.

I've heard the same rhetoric for 25 years. Just the initiative name changes.

Sad and laughable calling them leadership ! Very few real leaders around except the yes gals and guys that frown on the reality that are only sock puppets to help the suits feel good about their decisions and ego.

Should get rid of the whole ATLAS team. You can’t find any team that useless.

“My org has these totally illogical edicts where we are required to use AI and other similar things so many times a month whether it makes sense or not.”

The company is encouraging/requiring AI participation because the AI models can learn what you do, in order to replicate and replace your day to day activities.

All the times people claim as people are laid off, “we are losing knowledge”. Not a worry if you will keep working in AI. It reads your email, teams and your daily tasks.

“WE ARE THE BORG. YOU WILL BE ASSIMILATED. YOUR UNIQUENESS WILL BE ADDED TO OUR COLLECTIVE. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE.”

Spend your time looking for something else. The writing is on the wall. Once you realize that whatever thing you work on that you feel is important, but isn’t important to the folks at the top, time to find something else and stop caring about it. Do the minimum and find another team or job. Up to you to read the writing on the wall, but that’s the best advice I got early on. If the bosses don’t recognize or seem to care about what you’re doing, find something else to do.

Yeah now you have to show how hip you are and use “Ask AT&T” and Copilot— no matter if it actually isn’t effective for what you’re trying to do or not. Nether has made my job easier in any way.

Why stay and be miserable?

My org has these totally illogical edicts where we are required to use AI and other similar things so many times a month whether it makes sense or not. So people just go through the click motions. Another waste of time and I'm sure they generate stats claiming compliance and how much money they are saving

I left ATT about 6 years ago, having been there for nearly 20 years.

They were using all the same "automation!" lines on my team back then. The "collaboration" and "working from home" arguments were all the same, too. My team members were all uncertain about what to do, some of them feeling that "things would get better". 6 years on...things have not gotten better, and I would say have gotten worse, actually.

Take control of your life and find something else to do for work. There's an entire world out there, outside of ATT, that's more functional and will treat you like a human being. There's no need to continue swimming in this sea of uncertainty and misery. Remember, it's your life. If you stay, you're choosing to be miserable.

Take care of yourself and leave these thoughts at work. Do the bare minimum and protect your sanity. Your family needs you and loves you and no job is worth jeopardizing your health over. I know easier said than done. I struggle with this too. I want to give my best because I have good work ethics and morals, thats just the way we are… but we have to be more selfish to protect ourselves. I really have no concrete advice but take it easy.

“Leaders” who think AI will replace you in a year, don’t understand the nature of AI. If I can recall, none of our “leaders”, have technical degrees. You do the math.

I'm in the exact position as you - however I'm on the other end. I'm the person the top people are asking to automate your job. The problem is that- we can't automate it cause we need people like you to make sure the machine doesn't mess up. I'm leaving at btw, of I were you I would just put your head down and do what you need to do. Best of luck to you!

Ignore the threats. Threats are a sign of weakness, not strength. If they want to get rid of you, they will just do it, not give you months and years of warning. Their goal is to make you miserable enough to quit, because that is the only way they can (arguably) legally discriminate against your demographic. If they did not need you, you would not be here.

And you know what? If they fire you tomorrow, the sun will keep shining. There are plenty of places you can make a living, and almost all of them will treat you better than AT&T, so it might be the best thing that ever happened to you. No other employer will care that you were let go by the laughing stock of the communications industry.
