Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Some days I wonder why I keep pushing myself so hard here

I know I bring real value to the company, but it’s draining when leadership acts like it’s never enough. They lean on me whenever something important comes up, but when it’s time for recognition or rewards, suddenly I’m invisible. This has been going on for a while and I've just about had it. I'd be happy to be laid off at this point.

@nq you mean “show up” to sit in a different place and look at a computer monitor just the same as I do at home to do the same work I do from home, but with an hour drive each way and a less comfortable workstation surrounded by distracting coworkers on their own Teams calls

Oh, so employees have to show up for work now and actually do the work that they are paid to do? I can't imagine that going over well with the current crop of misfits, lol.

@bp why aren’t you writing your own goals? Supervisor shouldn’t be writing your goals.

I like your idea to ask specifically what needs to be done to exceed expectations. My TL is so bad at writing goals for pmp’s, it looks like a 2nd grade student copied them from some place but unfortunately did not take much time to put in the effort to research the goals.
His goals are so weak only his friends can get an exceeds expectations.
No goals just criticism!

Chevron is being structured to be SOLD, milk it for as long as it last and look for a better opportunity, while you are milking. Don't ignore the reality and that is the Chevron brand is no longer what it used to be, by design.

This post is VERY relatable. Sad to hear but this is the reality we face. Hang in there.

It has always been the case that the squeaky wheel gets the grease and not the wheel that is rolling smoothly. Obviously, wait until the layoffs are over, but in future performance meetings, switch the script from reviewing your past performance by asking "what specifically can I not do to exceed during this next period", or "what specifically do I need to do to get to the next grade level". Force them into very specific metrics so that you can return with evidence that you reached that goal. If your performance is strong, you have to make your direct report a little uncomfortable in blocking your advancement, and you also need to move your feet to new positions from time to time to job assignments listed to be at a higher grade level.

Sounds like you are just about there.

It’s just a job. Nothing else.

If you want gratification from others you will always be disappointed. Especially in a corporation.

The new operating model and culture will be so sc--wed up for a bit. Try to relax, enjoy being around people at work, and collect your decent paycheck (even if you’re a low psg, it’s still better than many out there!).
Just know that there are many around you feeling the same!

Feels like I wrote this. Can be frustrating having the goal posts move, “expectation is to exceed expectations”, and other BS reasons for an average PMP ranking.
However, I need to keep doing my best to keep that bi monthly check, so really cannot fantasize about being laid off.
I think most are in this position.

Story I hear over and over and have experienced myself. If you’re not a HIPO or other favored group your career will progress at a snails pace no matter what you do. You can bust your butt be passionate and good at
Your work but if your not in one of the above buckets won’t matter unless you get a GM on your side.
