Thread regarding IBM layoffs

laid off after 9 years

ibm canada laid me off in ottawa after 9 years, and just weeks later they labeled me a low performer... i got an email saying this, even though my last review was positive. i asked my manager in toronto why it happened, and he said his director in austin told him to do it, adding that he never thought i'd find out. ibm does this so they can backfill the role with someone else... pure evil!!!

i think the ceo and senior executives are slowly ki-ling ibm because revenue is not really growing. every year they lay off thousands in north america, europe, and canada, then move jobs to india to cut labor costs by 80%. they make revenue look fine each quarter, but it's a scam cheating the shareholders.

@at Omg when I was there, I felt like they were barely giving me work and yet I was still getting these crazy raises. I was like, what is going on? Now, I realize. They were fattening me up for a potential layoff. Good thing I left.

This has been going on for few years now. First line managers are asked to mark an exit a percentage of people as Low performers. If your former manager does not follow the second line order, then he will be asked to mark and exit another person (yes, it is evil for you, but he is saving the job of another person for another quarter or two). The backfills are coming mostly from India but there have been some from Poland.

@at

This is the typical pump-and-dump scam run by Alvind and his corrupt and dishonest Indian management to transfer jobs to India. Under Alvind, IBM has become an unethical and disreputable company. This is all you can expect from a gangster who claims a lot of wonderful things, but is worthless trash.

50% Tariffs sounds like a good thing for Indian gangsters. And no bonus for Alvind for 2026 sounds like a very good thing.

Nov - Divisional award
Dec - informed I’m getting promoted in Jan
Jan - sorry, they promoted some others
Apr/May - largest raise of my life
Jul - labeled low performer
Sep - PIP

It was all a set up to boost how much I cost, so I could be replaced by someone in a low cost country and the savings would be even greater making the second line look better.

Don’t trust what your manager says and always be interviewing, even if you’re an introvert. Hope this helps someone.

yes,
i think it's common
they need to 'legally' justify replacing you with a cheaper lesser worker
to save money immediately no matter what it does in the long term
it gives them 'legal' cover, Do Not Trust the people above you
