I've been applying like crazy and I thought I had a job locked down after signing the offer, but the company just went silent during the background check. No updates, no responses, nothing. Now I'm left completely confused and stressed and feeling like I'm stuck here once again. Why would they ghost candidates like that?

Ghosting happens at every stage of this process. It’s totally rude and dehumanizing. You will never know if it was something you did because nobody will ever give feedback (legal reasons, I’ve heard,) so you won’t ever know what you need to work on and you’ll forever make the same mistakes. Some jobs are fake. Some recruiters are fake. Some jobs and recruiters are scams. Some jobs are posted multiple times on the same site but with slightly information so you are applying to the exact same position over and over without knowing. Some companies aren’t hiring but are collecting your information so they can understand the talent pool and/or your metadata so they can broker it. Some companies will reject you for jobs you didn’t even apply for—sometimes more than once. All AI recruiters are a trap. Third party job coaches will tell you it’s a numbers game, to customize your resume for each job you apply for, and to always include a cover letter, while many corporate recruiters say they never read cover letters so don’t bother. A missing plural “s” or an accidental hyphen on your resume will cause the ATS to immediately reject you, and AI will reject you if your metadata doesn’t match the desired aggregate. Job postings often don’t include the salary range because they know it’s not acceptable and they want to trick qualified people into applying and hopefully settling out of desperation. Job descriptions are sometimes completely AI-generated so they are basically just the textbook definition of the occupation but with outdated industry terminology and nonsense requirements. I’ve been searching, applying, interviewing, and getting rejected/ghosted for over two years now—this entire system is just a giant, burbling snake devouring itself endlessly. Get used to ghosting, and get used to rejection. Even with all this, I do not regret my choice to AEOI one, single bit.

Yes Indeed, the first think I tell them in an interview is that I need a vacation to start off with. That really shows them how willing I am to work and how ambitious I am!
This may be a sign that this is a company you may not want to work for if this is how they treat candidates. I had to turn down a job because they wouldn’t work around a vacation I had previously scheduled. This showed me how inflexible the company was. Better to find out now. Keep looking for something that’s a good fit. It will happen
It can be very frustrating for the candidate, but don't overthink it; Continue to apply elsewhere. Yes, it could be they found someone better and are just stringing you along while they try to finalize with that other applicant (trying to hold you as a backup). Alternatively, it might be that a key "decider" is on vacation or has had a family emergency, which has gridlocked their process. I have been on both sides of this fence, both as a candidate waiting for word and as a company team member waiting to receive final hiring approval. Delays do not always mean something is wrong; they can indicate that the process is just encountering a temporary snag.
Sorry you're going through this. It could be that the company is going through layoffs, so they're pausing any new hire activity. Even worse, the person you've been working with was let go, so you're left hanging.
Consider calling the Company. I have seen cases when scammers posted fake jobs, held fake interviews and supposedly makde jobs offers just needing a background check just so they could get your personal identity information.
Many years ago I interviewed and was selected for a job position with oxy. At the offer letter stage they vaporized. Never understood what happen and then at a trade show a guy read my badge and said, hey I remember you, we interviewed you and then we had to transfer an internal guy from South America for the position. I asked why they never called me back and he said I thought my boss called you. I said no never heard a word.
So the point is, as anything can happen tight up up the day you start a job. Don’t feel bad.
Your background check?
OP, wow...that's really poor form on the company's part. If something happened internally, like they now can't fill or are delaying filling that role, you should be at least briefed on what's going on and whether you'll likely be onboarded.
