I’ve been seeing this icon more and more lately. Maybe there is some truth to tracking attendance by network activity… which begs a few questions:
Do they not have anything better to do than track our every move?
Shouldn’t our leadership care more about the quality of our work than if our as--s are in seats at our homes or in their crusty offices?
It will be interesting to see what’s done about it and how many quality people get canned because of this asinine rule.
this, and badging data are nothing new. Badging data has been in use since at least 2018, to determine building occupancy rates and, at an individual level, who gets assigned vs unassigned seating
the reports being distributed to managers now are badging reports. The focus right now is on people who are not coming in at all, or almost never (I.e. 0-1 x per week on average). There's plenty to keep management occupied there, since significant #s of ppl aren't coming in. They don't even need the laptop location data for that.
the laptop location data is more of a backup to be used if needed. But it has been there at least as long as the badging reports - people are just noticing it now because of all the RTO agitation.
Yes, network logon activity is being provided to senior management in addition to badge swipe information. This is to cross reference and ensure those who swipe in are actually staying in the office and not just swiping in and leaving.
Door badging isn’t what is used for tracking RTO it is from the network
The location tracker (not Skype) is used to monitor "where" you are logged in. If you claim to be WFH in a hub city but keep logging in from a network in Cancun, this is how they know. It's part of their hub city strategy, and they've been doing it for a while. Whether they use the data for anything, I don't know.
Skype and teams show when you're active or not, typing, moving mouse. Your current status is there for everyone to see, even through Outlook. Had a manager who periodically during the day would ping us "Hi" and wait to see how long it would take for his directs to reply. Pretty lame when you're managing professionals but hey, it's WF!

There is no one actively sitting their watching the location data. I'm not sure it is even used much except to report the local weather in Teamworks.
