I can’t stop wondering what’s really going on behind the scenes when it comes to layoffs. Who decides which teams are safe and which ones get cut? Is it performance, politics, or just random numbers on a spreadsheet? It's like no one knows what logic is being applied.

Its been a long time now... but I was laid off in 2009... and then Kelly temp services called me 9 months later offering me the same job as a temp (with shizzier everything like benefits) and were shocked... SHOCKED... that I didn't jump at the chance to come back. Sigh. Also begged the question... well then why did you lay me off... Not that it is that hard to come up with an answer.

Nailed it, that's the personality type that seems to survive
@as+1 nailed it...
It's like trying to make sense of an insane person... you can't... and in a way be glad you can't because if they start to make sense... umm...
It never improves, been around layoffs back many years and the "reasons" and "processes shared" are laughable excuses for logic.
It's all of the above. Since humans are involved in the decision-making process it will be inherently biased and flawed. Remember, the more opaque the decisions and criteria the more protected the company and leaders are from discrimination lawsuits. Also, the more ambiguity and fear that can be instilled among the "troops" the better they can keep us all in line and not doing anything to rock the boat. Capitalism in America. Don't know if the alternatives are any better...so we just hope to scrape by with things as they are.
