Teams were running on fumes when I was there, and I walked away two years ago. Who are they planning to get rid of now?

Yes sadly. Spans are still being looked at.
When I left the company a few years ago, it was 30+k employees strong. Plenty of people to lay off. I don't want to imply that they are the most knowledgeable about the complex infrastructure. But then again, it's only code.
I was laid off in June. Our team was already down 2 people and was pretty strapped, needless to say things didn't get better in June, for those that were left.
