Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Sad reality

It's not the tariff situation at all. I've been looking at jobs for almost 2 years now because I knew this huge reorg was coming. The job market in US has cratered unless you're in a very highly specialized technical field such as AI, niche engineering. I am on the business side of things and you can get offers but they're few and far between. I applied for hundreds of jobs and got only like 3 interviews and a couple offers, lower than Chevron comp.
My SO in finance got laid off in 2022 and same problem tons of applications zero response. Finally got something at much lower pay.
The job market has fundamentally shifted and it;s been this way since at least 2021-2022. Offshoring is rampant. Americans are selling themselves out every single day. It's truly insane.

Bumping this from @ax+1k3nwm9t5, sad but true.

Should’ve studied something hard and positioned yourself for the future instead of fluff and riding coattails here. Good luck

OP, are you in Texas? I’m in California and got multiple offers very quickly. My close Chevron contacts are getting new jobs quickly as well. Compensation for most is similar with some getting relatively significant bumps in TC moving into tech.

This week Trump announced he will doubling the number of Chinese student visa's in next years college application process. The goal according to the administration is to bring the "brightest and best" to the USA so some will get jobs with the US tech industry after graduation.
BTW i am not bashing or supporting trump just providing feedback regarding the future job market and the increase in foreign student visas specially for China.

WSJ says new grads in AI can make $200,000+/yr and many 25 years olds make more than a million a year.

Meanwhile, China is shepherding huge amounts pf gifted students into the AI field.. So AI will largely offshore soon.

It it real tough out here looking for jobs. If you leave a company make sure you are plenty of cash or you are retiring. It is in all fields and with AI and offshoring it is only getting worse. Now days learning a trade that builds are repairs things is better than the majority of jobs for those with bachelors and higher degrees. Before you leave find a job, and even if hired be prepared to be ghosted or the offer taken back before you ever start. It is happening all over the place for reasons none of us individually have control over.

While your job search may/may not be impacted by the current tariffs, evidence suggests that tariffs do have a negative impact on employment opportunities due to increased costs for businesses, disruptions of global supply chains, retaliation from other countries, decreased consumer demand, etc. Add in the current US political climate and it's easy to see why business is hesitant to add or replace headcount. All that aside, I'm sorry it's been tough for you and sincerely wish you the best of luck in your job search.
