An email went out today from NH control org that they are consolidating employees in new locations starting Q1 2023.
Anybody have insight on the locations that have been selected to be used for "consolidation"? There are people in the greater Phoenix, AZ. area that live over an hour away from these buildings where it's not feasible to have to travel that far and I'm sure it's similar in Des Moines, Minneapolis, etc.
WFH resolves all of those issues. People could be in a thousand different cities and it doesn't matter. If we want solid efficiency ratios it's easy to get there. BYOD, sell 90% of the admin buildings, and profit. Massive savings, less HR drama, happier workforce, lower wages (because you can hire people in lower cost of living areas), less discrimination, and a much much more resilient / BCP friendly organization.
NH inherited the controls group. It is duplicative to what the businesses have been staffing. NH wants the centralized control group gone.
Phoenix = chandler
They really should have specified in that email. Saying “Phoenix” could be many sites, but they want you all in chandler from what I was told.

this happened to me many years ago. was working in Tempe then the ocotillo center opener and they moved my whole group down to Chandler. remember, your work is at will and the company can change the terms of your working conditions whenever they want. don't like it then leave.

Re Des Moines commute
I didn’t make the original comment, but depending on WDSM location, downtown location and rush hour traffic, it could easily take 30 minutes one way, which means a 1 hour round trip commute. He wasn’t far off!
It’s absolutely hilarious that someone in Iowa is thinking that it would take an hour commute when it is obvious that driving from West Des Moines to downtown takes no more at worse than 20 minutes someone’s trying to sell you a s-b story
Chandler has 4 empty office buildings, 4 floors each.
People on here complain we have too much real estate. Well this is how you dump it by consolidating into fewer buildings.
Many control teams staffed up when space was limited so they didn’t focus on geography. That bled into Covid times when geography was even less meaningful. Now that they are all under NH I’m sure he is thinking why do my 12 (or whatever) directs have people in 100 cities? And the point about consolidating our CRE profile is on point too. Is it going to tick a lot of people off? You know it.
end of the day it is what it is and happens across many companies, not just WF. I took a job years ago only to have the office shutdown and moved 10 months after I started. Commute got worse, but my choice was to live with it or leave. I think you'll find for every person affected negativily by decisions like this you'll find someone positively affected. again, ball is in your court, don't like it then change jobs or change companies.
The A holes in the tower in NYC don't give a damn what's "feasible" for you. They want you to leave, so the less feasible the better. CPG wants to sell buildings and let leases expire because it's pretty much the only trick they have left. Both groups need to be fired before it's too late.
I work in one of the West Des Moines campuses and live only about 5 miles from it, it's about a 15 minute commute each way. I set up my living situation years ago to keep the commute reasonable.
When the e-mail we got says they're going to consolidate into Des Moines, that indicates to me they're looking to put all of us in one of the downtown buildings. That would add at least an hour of commute time to each day of going into the office, possibly more depending on road conditions and/or accidents, along with the added fuel and maintenance costs (and possible parking costs?). All of this to just drive in, sit at a desk by myself and talk to people scattered throughout the country.
I'm not down with that, and will immediately start looking for other positions that are based out in WDM.
OP, what else do you know about the Phoenix locations? Are they all consolidating to the Chandler campus? I believe that's the biggest one in the metro.
I don't have any insight, just opinions. This sounds like -- hey, all of you folks in a particular city that roll up to Nate are going to be consolidated into one floor of one building.
Right now many of us are already in the same building, perhaps different floors as we are in different businesses.
What doesn't change is the fact that our jobs are done 100% via computer and the fact that there hasn't been a business need for so many of us to meet with someone face to face to accomplish a job-related task in many years. In fact, meeting with someone face to face is often less efficient as there's no record trail of the interaction/decisions and email follow-up/summaries to loop in anyone who wasn't privy to that face-to-face interaction are still necessary. A phone/skype call accomplishes anything I need when I have a need to interact with someone and it's been that way for years.
When are these leadership id--ts going to realize that in-person collaboration is dead in the corporate world of massive corporations. They can keep trying to herd us together but the fact of the matter is, people aren't collaborating face-to-face anymore for work at Wells Fargo. They are sharing the same air while they put on headphones and sit on meetings the same as they do remotely. If they walked a floor on one of these campuses that's filled with non-customer facing roles, they'd see it.
Are you sure it's building specific? In my LOB it is more market based. For instance, in Scottsdale, it's not the actual Chandler campus but that you are in the Scottsdale area. They just don't want you in say Flagstaff or Tucson.
