Thread regarding CDW layoffs

This is the CDW Cry Baby board. Here is some tough love.

It’s a cut-throat world. Work hard, exceed your measurements or add > 5X your cost to GP, keep your skills relevant, KEEP YOUR JOB. Don’t do all that, GET LAID OFF. The people who are on this board complaining but are still at CDW-guarantee you’re next on the chopping block. If you got laid off, sorry- your ROI wasn’t adding up or possibly a few may have got caught in the tuna net. Either way, I’m sure you are a very nice person who forgot the rules of survival. It su-ks. Move on. Do better at the next place. There will be a next place.

Truth is painful. Downvote me.

@1bq Contracts DO actually expire....

When you cut off heads, don’t be surprised when the ghosts whisper secrets to your rivals. Contracts don’t expire—trust does. You traded loyalty for profit. The dead remember. And the branches still rot from within.

@15z basically need to work to eat, maybe retire one day with dignity, maybe see some of the world. I’m just saying that this is the way of corporate America today it doesn’t matter if you keep winning, layoffs are real and will hit good employees that are productive and valuable. Just because the company performs doesn’t mean there aren’t levers that will be pulled to make it look even better.

@18k - a Corporate Athlete is somebody who's skills transcend a specific vertical. In other words, they are great leaders and/or performers, regardless of the department, segment, or team they are on. These are Coworkers we can place on any team and they will do well. Those Coworkers need rotations and exposure to different teams.

@15f all that Microsoft has done is win…then layoff. It’s not just doing a good job or winning, everyone is disposable in corporate America.

The silliest thing I have read in a while "HR needs to value culture and nice people" OK. How about we simply go win, and then our lives are less stressful because money is flowing and layoffs stop. That will make me feel even more "nice". This company has been commandeered by a losing mentality. "Oh, hey guys. Just be nice everyone! Heaven help us if we upset anyone."

@v3 I think that issue goes both ways. CDW Education rehired a Director they had boomeranged twice and is stuck in his perceptions of the organization. People that came in through acquisitions or were hired in between loathe him as his same old same old mercurial approach is horrible for software development and product management.

Says the redundant middle manager who does nothing of value but manage people.

3/4 of your ilk could be removed while keeping the actual billable resources that bring in the revenue and combining silos.

Here's an idea - bring in external leaders with actual leadership /leading experience and/or actually promote internal people who are great at leading others. Stop bringing in consultants or former consultants as "leaders".... they su-k and don't get CDW.
We claim we want corporate athletes and then forget about / discard the people who actually do rotations.
We have hired so many external "leaders" that we don't even know who we are anymore. These people come in thinking they are so smart and they propose solutions to our problems that we have already thought of and/or tried 10 times before.

@pw I hope you do. it might do you well to act on it . Other leaders like Jamie Dimon Chief JpMorgan said recently , " You should fire the a--holes," Dimon said, to loud applause from the audience. "It only takes a few of 'em to destroy a meeting."

His remarks came in response to a question about how leaders can prepare future generations to lead in a world shaped by AI, digital distractions and remote work. Dimon said the first step is a “constant and honest assessment” of all aspects of an organisation, from customer relationships to internal culture, and then acting on what is found."

@kr Only if you enjoy being entertained by some of our CDW family members that have been laid off and are now in pain. Where has compassion gone in our company????? We have brought in some horrible human beings that don't fit the mold of what made our company great. HR needs to value culture and nice people along with the ability and experience. Based on some of these mean responses, we are failing miserably on that.

@OP Ha ha. If you only wait for when your customers need you, you are not proactive nor adding value. One of the signs of a poor worker. Now I know why you aren't here. You are a low paid coworker whose departure would not save us anything. You are certainly not a Director nor running a program. Continue your low level job that requires after hours work and call us when you are somebody.

That being said, the fact that you keep coming on here and commenting makes us happy. You are officially a regular on the board.

@OP Poorly written PSYOPS post that flopped. HR hides bad managers AND it's not about a cut-throat world. It's about a poorly run company trying to compete and mismanaging finances.

@dy Work hours? That’s indicative as to why you are one 100% of the cry babies. You see, Many of us don’t have “work hours” by your definition. They are all “work hours”. My customers don’t have work hours so neither do I. We work when we need to ( which is a lot) and take time for other things when we need to(which isn’t enough, usually)

When YOU get laid off ( and it is when) maybe go get a tech job at Best Buy? They do have nicely designated work hours for you!

I posted a similar post a few years back that is still on this board. Way down the list. I too bought that if you just worked hard and performed, all would be well. I also thought those that complained were all babies. Then I reaped what I sowed when they exited me.

The original poster is semi-correct. But for those of you that like I, were the top performer and were released because my payment for all my sales far exceeded my counterparts he offered the correct guidance. After being the top sales on my group through the years, they realized the savings that could be obtained by eliminating me. Here is where the original poster is correct, rather than cry, I sought a great firm to fight the illegal action and was handsomely paid by keeping it out of court. You see, he is right that it is tough out there but if you violate the rules, that is no longer part of the tough world. So take his advise and be strong and take it to court. You will win there or they will pay to keep it out of court. Thank you to the original poster for posting the need for strength in the face of injustice.

I now look back and see maybe I deserved what I had coming because success made me feel untouchable. Worse, it made me insensitive to those of you that were released. He is right that business sometimes causes layoffs but those of us that had become insensitive to it lost even more. We used to care about each other. We would understand that some people were hurt by this and shed tears because they had family dependent of them. We failed to realized that some were doing a great job but someone in India could do it cheaper and they lost their job as they were excelling here in the states. Those actions hurt and those of you that are still in, be thankful but also care enough about people to not slam them in their rough times. Be what CDW used to be and be understanding, listen, and be caring through it all. Even if it is just a simple prayer or hope that everyone will be well.

I hope that all of you that remain and those that leave all find peace and comfort in your futures.

@bq the inefficiencies, lower public relations risk, huge cost savings could be realized by flattening the management layer. According to this its just a matter of when. https://culturepartners.com/insights/where-have-all-the-middle-managers-gone/
"Not long ago, the middle manager was the linchpin of the corporate world. They juggled project management, performance tracking, and resource allocation while ensuring their teams stayed on track. Today, those responsibilities are increasingly being handed over to artificial intelligence and predictive analytics, leaving many wondering: where have all the middle managers gone? ...Let’s be honest: many middle managers aren’t contributing value; they’re actively diminishing it. A poor leader can derail entire teams, create bottlenecks, and erode morale. Streamlined hierarchies cut out the noise, leaving room for real leadership to shine. "
