Thread regarding New York - Presbyterian Hospital layoffs

NYPH Laying off employes from corporate to other front liners

Corwin and Donely made it clear - and cuts are already happening! VPs started to advise their teams this week to prepare to be layoff is definitely coming. Working in the corporate office at 466 Lexington; the nervousness of staff is visible from blocks away. Everyone is seen their teams shrink and they might be next.

Do we know of how many more? Personally I haven't heard of more than 50ish confirmed, no one from my side yet, definitely not near the 1k that has been stated. Its like walking on eggshells everyday wondering if they are going to call the whole department in or not. Especially with next week being the supposed last week of this are we going to see a sudden huge hit or was the 1k just bluster?

3 cath lab nurses was given notice. 1 of the 3 terminated, and the other 2 will be filling out open positions in other units.

Some people commented that the layoffs were performance based. Please be mindful when you things like that, Some of my colleagues who were let go were vested employees who consistently got exceeds expectation on their performance reviews and were asked to clean out their desks like they did something wrong. Goes to show they really didn't care about your loyalty and hard work. I'm surprised that people are here trying to make sense of this messed up situation saying "oh yeah they doing the right thing by letting the low performers go" when the real low performers were the top leadership, they have 100% sc--wed us over with their low performance and let us take the fall it. Please don't get this twisted.

The media needs to get ahold of this story. We were told nothing about the payout to hundreds of women at the hands of this miserable physician. We were told another story and now 1000 people are losing their jobs because of it! Is Corwin’s daughter losing her job I wonder?

Wasn't the motto "We put patients first" ? With these cuts, do they anymore, or just put first their supposedly "not for profit" bottom line? What happened to mission, or is it now margin only at any cost, damn the consequences ?

Anyone knows a good labor attorney? I get we are at will and not unionized but this has to be illegal and certainly in fair employer practice to let people go without severance after so many years. Even if you’re on year two we’re professionals and we need to fight for what’s right.

Exceptionally disappointed that as an organization that we have treated our colleagues like this. We used to be a team that solves problems together.
If you get a resume from a NYP staff member that has been laid off, hire them as they are the best and the brightest. They will serve your organization and patients with care, empathy and dignity.
Amazing things will be happening elsewhere.

I rather go back to NYU than stay at NYP. At least NYU treat employees better. Only reason I came to NYP was the commute but I’m reconsidering it.

How do they determine who is laid off?
Seniority? performance/evaluations? random?

If RNs are being laid off, patient care is clearly not the priority. Multiple patient care directors/nurse managers have been laid off at hudson valley - why target such a small hospital? Just to keep the corporate leadership bonuses? Not sure how NYP will recover their reputation from this

Two RNs at CHONY’s postpartum unit have been laid off. More to come apparently. Insane that RNs are being forced out. All NPs on selected pediatric units have been laid off as well. We are bleeding out! Help!

Supposedly there has been talks of strikes and lawsuits brewing.

Also supervisors are stating, ohh this is the last of the layoffs meanwhile they are laying off till Memorial Day.

They laid off a bunch of people at the Hudson valley location, which is unheard of.

Got workers who been here for 20 years and never heard of a layoff, especially laying off front line workers too!!

Everyone gotta start looking to northwell or monti bc this ain’t it. The truth is coming out, it’s a false reality what this company stands for.

They feed u what u want to heat but in the end its all lies, they aren’t the top organization in New York and you watch the he company crumble at the hands of these over political higher ups

Any word on the severance package? Can people please provide a bit more detail. Location, position, title, number year experience, notice time, severance package. Agree with the post before, this is a terrible feeling to have over your head while working. I wish they would make it swift and transparent.

Getting to your job every morning fearing you will be next is a nightmare. I have dedicated my entire career to NYP and I had to see colleges and other hard working staff let go. It will take a lot for NYP to gain staff confidence and loyalty after this. There’s no transparency we have had to let people go minutes notice. And we might be next. For any young RN or residents do not spend your careers here go where your livelihood will not be put in jeopardy regardless of the outstanding work you do.

Do we think there will another round of layoffs? I hope not but from what I’ve heard across each hospital volume is down and spending is up. Now we got the 1111 campus opening. Our competition Montifore, Mount Sinai, NYU and Northwell is taking the patients. Even our own employees don’t want to be patients of NYP. Terrible times ahead.

This round is definitely performance based, the people that have been let go stand out vs the average of their collegues with the same title. Is what I noticed so far

My personal opinion is that most (with some exceptions) of the staff let go in clinical IT were poor performers.

Leadership is getting something right with these layoffs but a broken clock is right twice a day.

The current issues NYP is facing are multi-factor. Putting aside the macroeconomic challenges, certainly those coming from the government, one needs to focus in exclusively on the one executive who has continued to consistently demonstrate his failure to lead effectively, and failing to hire senior staff in his area that are effective in their roles.

That is Shaun Smith, Group SVP, Chief People and Culture Officer at NewYork-Presbyterian. Year by year the HR function has allowed people issues to plague the institution, including: allowing unchecked growth in headcount despite thinning organization finances; refusal to eliminate teams under him that no longer provide value to the organization (TD, People OPs and Strategy, etc.); failure to establish core HR programs now common across modern organizations (true talent planning - succession, skill building/talent migration, and leadership development.) He’s hired a Chief Talent Officer in the past two years who had effectively produced zero net new programs or definable strategies - just another executive with bloated pay that accomplishes nothing in service to the organization, its patients and its employees. And, he’s allowed turnover to grow out of control in key areas of NYP. He’s created fiefdoms to protect his interests and those of his longtime employees, despite the organization’s push for consolidation, streamlining, and a need for centralized functions - like HRIS existing outside of IT. He has enabled the organization to now rely upon annual layoffs to fix his mistakes, causing thousands of New Yorkers and their families to suffer the consequences of his inactions.

Instead, he’s focused on pay to play “best employer” or “great places to work” recognition surveys to pay for false recognition of the organization to obfuscate the reality of his poor leadership in the People function. Wasting more money to insulate himself from his very obvious failure.

Even now, his part of the organization is taking the smallest cuts to positions while other corporate functions have deep, impactful cuts. Cuts in other areas that we believe will disrupt our ability to provide reliable, quality services to the rest of the enterprise.

No one understands why he has continued to persist at this organization when he seems to provide negative value, besides the obvious tricks he employs to boost outside recognition of himself and the HR group. Internally, no one shares this same perspective on his, nor his team’s performance. One must question- what ties does he have to Corwin or to certain board members that protects him and perpetuates his receipt of over $1.7m per year base compensation plan.

WHY IS OUR BOARD ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL WITH THIS?

WHY AREN’T THEY CHOOSING TO SERVE THE NEEDS OF OUR PEOPLE AND, BY EXTENSION, OUR PATIENTS - The whole reason for our being?

IT positions sounds very broad, any particular teams ?

There’s desktop support, Epic (which is subdivided by module) IT infrastructure, etc.

Ironically there’s remote positions but not much is spoken about it considering some teams have to come in 4 days a week.
