Work from where??

Expressing my deep disappointment in the decision to mandate a full-time return to the office, five days a week. This move feels not only regressive but also disconnected from the realities and needs of a modern, diverse workforce.

For many of us, remote and hybrid work have not only proven effective but essential in balancing professional responsibilities with the demands of real life—childcare, elder care, health, and the basic ability to prepare healthy meals for our families. The decision to revoke that flexibility seems rooted in outdated thinking, made by those at the top who, frankly, have the privilege of not needing to worry about these everyday challenges.

This policy disregards the productivity gains and well-being improvements that many of us have demonstrated over the past few years. It sends a message that presence is valued over performance, and that the personal costs we bear to show up physically are of little concern to leadership.

If the company is truly committed to equity, inclusion, and retaining top talent, I would urge them reconsider this mandate and listen to the voices of those whose daily lives are most impacted by this decision.

The comments in support of this are clearly from people who have no definition of self outside of their job, work is their #1 priority over all else and have no concept of what it's like to just need a paycheque. The decision boils down to trust and, as someone else here commented, antiquated definitions of productivity. If they can't put eyes on you, you can't possibly be working. They also need to justify the ridiculous amount of upper management with no purpose other than to walk around and see who is at their desk. Working from home and have something to finish or want to get ahead on something? An extra 30 minutes or hour for free is no big deal. Working from the office and have to pick up my kids from daycare? Not an option since, as a front line peon, I can't afford a nanny like the decision makers can. My mother used to say "if your friend jumped off a bridge would you?" This return to work 5 days sounds just like that, our competitors are jumping off bridges so we follow suit.

There are going to be a minor percentage of bad fruit in any given scenario, with a simple life fact that nothing is ever perfect. So getting all the coffee social breaks, gym, downtown errands and shopping done at office hour days is ok somehow. In that case, all the social life aspects are complete in work hours - how is that any better?

There are too many working from home doing house work on the company dime. Maybe some are productive. But it is less than 10%.

I've had people tell me there house work gets done so they can have there off time free.

The many ruined it for the few that are productive at home.

Having been around for 30 years and many companies after and lots of ups and downs and never a lay off yet. Let me say this is this place takes the medal on everything terrible possible. If one questions, the stock performance always is the truth teller. Who’s to blame, for sure it is the director and upward level to execs always.

I would love to see someone be brave and ask our execs for the reason behind this change during the company wide townhall. The reasoning in the Helix article is so vague.

It is a tough transition... I was working 4 in and 1 at home until recently... That one day working from home is truly a day to get more done with less distraction. I absolutely enjoy the time saving for the commute (which is 45 minutes each way at least). For those that have not experiences WFH, there seems to be a massive misconception about how that time is managed. It is not a vacation day, it is not a day spent in front of the TV. Most people actually work longer hours and are more focused on that day or days at home. It seems to be the way more companies are moving though... I truly believe employees that have a more flexible work environment are happier and more productive but employee morale is no longer important to larger companies

Prior to 2015 we had the first and third Friday of the month off. We worked longer days for it and we didn’t work an hour less per year. The executives cancelled this program purely for optics. Classic Cenovus “leadership” mentality.

Because we know and can do better, but let’s just go back to the old times because company is underperforming and the morale is extremely low. Why don’t we go back to PC and dial up phones, world was also a lot better at those times too.

Tips for working in the office:

  1. enroll children in childcare 5 days a week or find sitter to come to your home
  2. meal prep on weekends so you have meals ready to cook
  3. schedule appointments on same day stacked whenever possible and use a paid time off day.

When solving problems, all people (including CEOs and VPS) fall back on what has worked for them in the past. So when performance is below expectations, the leaders will fall back to what has worked in their past (back to the office, re-orgs, layoffs, etc.). Most people will react and not spend time thinking through their decisions. Back to the office is the trend right now (Amazon, Meta, Suncor, Pembina) so with the flow we go
