Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Mass Layoffs

Do you think AT&T will have mass layoffs? Or, has the consistent downsizing prevented a complete sl------r?

Not withstanding the hiring freeze not backfilling positions has been going on for awhile in some areas. Someone leaves and damn near impossible to replace. Techs complaining about long drive times for jobs they pick up. OT has increased in some cases but takes a he-l of a lot of that to justify a technicians salary, benefits, vehicle/tool, etc costs.

AT&T has experienced record layoffs. According to reports from January 2022, the company has let go of a whopping 77,400 employees in four years.

We've been here for 4 years. Anybody see 19,000 people "laid off"? No. We're seeing a lot of packages, and AT&T not back-filling positions of people who leave. And how much of the count is in businesses sold and spun off?

Well, for 2023, I think AT&T has run out of businesses to spin off, so 2023 will be like 2022. According to the article, that's 19000 people this year. Whether or not they lost 19K, one thing is clear - no where near that number was lost through layoff.

A phone company does not need that many workers.

AT&T

AT&T has experienced record layoffs. According to reports from January 2022, the company has let go of a whopping 77,400 employees in four years. This number is so high that it rivals T-Mobile’s entire workforce. Most of the positions that were nixed were either technicians or clerical jobs. The company additionally made plans to permanently close more than 250 AT&T Mobility and Cricket Wireless stores. Pre-pandemic, the company was pursuing initiatives to cut $6 billion in costs.

There are suggestions that AT&T is looking to hire cheaper contractors than employ union members, although the company issued statements saying that “reducing our workforce is a difficult decision that we don’t take lightly,” while explaining the severance packages that they planned to offer eligible employees.

Mobility Customer Care had their Surplus call on 10/24. HR Survey if you want to volunteer to be considered, if not enough volunteers, then mandatory offers. Off payroll date of 12/1 for either case. The mgt surplus is across all BUs.

I would expect the layoffs to be considerably higher than the past few years. The company is going to fiber and wants to rid itself of copper infrastructure and those that support it. 2023 will see a lot of folks exit who are not ready to go.
I wish everyone the best in these uncertain times

No, layoffs are expensive and we have a lot of people retiring and other attrition. Expect less and less backfills. The only areas that may have layoffs are those that are being sunset.
