Work Your Way - New GSC Guidelines

A 50 km radius (not commuting distance!) defines “near remote,” while 100 km defines “distant remote.”

Our colleagues within a 90 km radius may have to commute 130 km twice a day or spend 4–6 hours daily in the car, depending on highway access and traffic - just for “collaboration.” Even if they’re part of a global team with no local contacts, spending 80% of their time on international projects and calls. All in the name of “better collaboration”?

If this is the new rule, then I’ll stop being flexible in EMEA. No more calls with Asia at 8 AM or the US at 11 PM. I’ll come in for a 9–5 job instead. Asia can have the first hour, the US my last two hours. Oh, I’ll be so much more productive. Not.

Excuse me, but how does this help, aside from forcing people out? It’s a slap in the face to those already ignoring labor laws, working late for 3M, only to have another meeting nine hours later after barely seven hours of sleep. Canceling my evening plans with friends for important meetings? Yeah, sure.

I have no words for this. Or for how I feel right now.

What’s going on?

I once observed MV rip a new product developer to shreds, in public at an internal 3M tech show. Didn't try to understand the technology, yet told the developer why it couldn't possibly work in the market. Even if true, there are ways to communicate without destroying the person's enthusiasm for 3M and her job. Atrocious leadership.

Clearly anyone who writes this has never substantially interacted with Mike Vale.

I can assure you from personal experience that Mike was the antithesis of the McKnight principle.

To the OP, I would NOT be cancelling plans with friends just to attend a meeting. You do have a life outside of work. Maybe a meeting once or twice a month in the evenings I would say. But if I have important plans with family or friends, it is an out of office notification and email me if there is something you want me to follow up on.

This is why Mike Vale should never have been fired. He oozed 3M values out of his pores and loved the culture. He'd never do this dastardly deed like BB.

Those in the know are aware of how he was set up with Bogus circumstances.

Can you clarify what happened for those that already escaped the dumpster fire? Distant remote and near remote employees have to work their way at HQ?

I keep going back and forth...

Party of me thinks that Bill is just this way because he was hauled out of retirement and hasn't kept up with the times, so he's just throwing stale spaghetti at the wall and trying to see what sticks.

But then I realize that Bill is 100% trying to drive people out. There no good reason to do half of the things he's doing except to get people to leave.

Woodbury corruption has started again. Best to quit and get away from the epicenter of the dereliction and erosion of faith in the system.

BB was despised as CEO by 2/3rds of his employees at his former company. He set a stretch goal to be despised by 80 percent with a 2X payout at 85.

Well done (not!) BILL THE PILL.

Quit quitting coming to 3M Center and the rest of the world. Trust me, you can watch TPIR on your phone while doodling at your PC and make sure to take long lunches at the Center Cafe. Working on your phone or so make it appear.

Make it a game. BB imposes his will. Employees give him it back in spades. BB is working something like 60 percent of the time from his mansion in Florida, so the mo--s in Maplewood tell us.

3M execs are trying to get people to quit on their own. Expectations of fairness or empathy are naive these days. Old 3M and valuing workers and communities is gone. It is putting the most work on the least employees and calling the global now. Then juicing the stock through buybacks and running to other companies when the lemon is squeezed dry…..leaving ruined lives and a destroyed company in their wake. So, quiet quit globally but prepare a backup plan
