I thought with the current economic climate we are already in a recession. Why are there still articles being written about the upcoming 2023 recession. Does that mean ATT will be culling the herd with massive layoffs 2023 to appease shareholders?

It’s not politicians warning of a worsening recession in 2023. The financial groups, banks, and economists NOT in the Fed understand that it’s going to worsen, as we have already hit what has been historically been defined as recession. So, 20% reduction in force for AT&T again, like last recession.
The recession talk is overstated to to give worriers something to talk about.
Remember 2007-2008 when people lost houses, life savings and jobs massively, people living in cars in every shopping center? We haven’t hit that bottom yet.
My honest opinion this one has to be worst, matter of fact we were due a recession in 2020 , but it was covered and justified by COVID and the unbelievable amount of money printed by the US and the European Union.
Add some frictions between the west and the emerging countries that we can’t threaten or scare anymore.
Save your money people and for god’s sake don’t go buy the 14karat gold and silver everyone trying to sell you.
One thing that I will never understand is why companies wait until holidays are around the corner to start firing people.

We’re already in a recession and have been for a while. Recessions don’t necessarily dictate layoffs with T, though. We’ve hired during recessions before and had layoffs when the economy was doing well as recently as 2019.

There’s lots of things required for a recesssion, and we have not met them all. Don’t fret based on some politicians rethoric . Companies are making moves based off their individual needs. AT&T is no different. They will shed the un-needed ones as they have always done.
The mid-term elections are over, so it's okay now to say there's a recession looming. From what I'm reading, it's going to be global and really dire. Hold on to your money folks.
