Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

We were not “valued” enough

ATT made a ranked list of who they felt important to keep. Then kicked other people out of their jobs (who were good at their jobs) in order to slide the others in somewhere. DISGUSTING.
14 day notice the week before thanksgiving in Q4 with no jobs available.

The person I know who was affected was told it was last in, first out and had been there less than 6 months. However, was outperforming much more senior people in generating revenue. I assumed that selection criteria was based on eliminating legal risk. However, cannot have different selection criteria for different groups across an organization. I am an expert in this field so you are just gonna have to trust me on this. If they are telling some folks last in, some performance, some skills, and others something else… someone should question this. My company has NEVER done a layoff in December. I am in a position to approve a decision like that and never will.

They knew what they were doing when they put that hiring freeze in, but they will stick it to the surplus folks even when they’re isn’t a hiring freeze.

They are running a business not a charity. Stockholders are your bosses and they do not care if you have a family or it’s the holidays. That’s how it is for a corporation- if you don’t get that by now- you should be surplussed

To provide more details for those claiming "BS", were you ever in business sales? smb, mid market, enterprise, gem, global? if not then you don't know the sales mentality at AT&T. Most sales executives up to President of their business sales segments all came from cut throat sales channels, not tech dev, not IT, not tech ops, not finance, only sales. So, if you are part of a layoff pool (chosen from the bottom 50% of revenue producers), sales leadership will not rehire you into a new position despite having 60 days to look for a job. It happened this way from 2008 to 2022. It happened in NBM before it was called National Business, it happened in PCG before it was called National Business, it happened in Global Business, it happened in Signature Client Group, it happened in Government, Education, Medical, it happened in Industry Solutions, and it's happening this year in Mid Markets Mobility, Fiber Acquisition, and in Retail.

I was already in talks with another company who loves me after a few interviews to get a Staff Engineer position. Currently I'm titled "Senior Software Engineer" at T so the layoff is a perfectly timed bonus for me. I am the top talent on my team which is why I was leaving anyway after 10 years total. Once T bought DIRECTV, whom I worked for, it went down hill and I never received another promotion. With DIRECTV, I was promoted every year almost because of my skills and development. Sad they don't realize top talent even though they emphasize they do, it's a lie if you're within the bureaucracy and political landscape. In 10 years, I'll be CTO, CIO of another company I'm sure. If you aren't in Dallas, you aren't going to get anywhere with T anyway.

I love how they planned the surplus meeting to navigate this firing for everyone the day before Thanksgiving when they know everyone is on vacation.

You would have been "valued" if you produced more results instead of talking about results.

I know tons of folks who found new positions in the company back when they offered 30/60 day options.

And I know at least one person who obtained a position in this two week notification era. How, I am not sure! But they pulled it off. May have already been looking, who knows.

@kpz+1jLLxyik. When the layoff people had 60 days to find another job at AT&T, the hiring leaders were told not to hire any of those "layoff" pool of candidates.

You do not provide much detail..

From personal experience I can tell you that a few years ago I was surplused and was picked up in the 50 day range. At the time I was in techdev. I personally know a handful of people that were picked up during their 60 day window since my experience a few years back.

As for right now in 12/2022 - 1Q2023- yes it is likely nobody will be considered for other jobs. This is a hardcore exercise in reducing head count while at the same time filling positions with recent grads and getting some of them in the TDP program. Corey stated this exact same thing in his town hall and the same was mentioned in the Patadise town hall days a go

Laying employees off around the holidays is an important element of Toxic-T. Merry Chistmas!

The Stink is THE most important, and the Stink is the most DISGUSTING.

Stink and Ratty are at the top of the CEO Wall of Shame for a reason.

Were you at AT&T a year or less? No one with any period of employment beyond 6 months should be surprised by layoffs!

@kpz+1jLLxyik that's B.S. The directive for hiring managers was always to fasttrack and prioritize interviews and decisions for surplusses. No matter what garbage people want to spew here, the majority of surplusses are decent folks and hiring managers would much rather take an experienced employee that might be average over a wet behind the ears new hire who needs a safe space, two hour lunches, and constant reassurance. Sure, RIF's are an easy way to shed cr---y employees, but the majority are decent that end up ranking out of however many jobs the org is allowed to keep.
These are gut wrenching decisions directors and AVP's hare forced to make, they don't enjoy it, they don't look forward to it, and the tons of bitter people here have no idea what it's like to have to block of a day and make those calls to people who work for you, some you've known for years.

I was in a similar boat. You can't even transfer to a new job at AT&T in 14 days. It takes that long just to get the first interview. When the layoff people had 60 days to find another job at AT&T, the hiring leaders were told not to hire any of those "layoff" pool of candidates.
