Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Retire already

If you are within a couple years of retiring, why not go ahead and retire vs taking a job away from a younger person who will be severely impacted by layoffs? Greed? Stupidity? Or is this just what the karen and boomer generation does? They only care about themselves.

Let me see if I get this right: some Gen Z infant is whinging greedily about why older workers aren't retiring early, accusing them of being greedy.

I mean, the hypocrisy is astonishing - even for the Gen Z infants out there.

Sorry, child. You lose.

My crib and sleds are payed for. I've saved and made responsible decisions with my $ .
I was brought up in a no excuses environment with very little coddling. I expect very little, it keeps disappointment at a minimum. At 55 I attended a night school and obtained a skill with real certifications and external validation. Two sources of active income is always a hedge against T's insanity. Stop focusing on the negative and grow a set. Life is too short to sit on the bench and whine about the circumstances being stacked against you.

Wow! A gen Z wants something for nothing, expects others to bend to their will and has unreasonable expectations. Real shocking.

People have the right to stay...and at this point, probably should. I'm sure they have spoken with their financial advisors, and learned they already lost...and should have retired last year. Jokes on you...have at it!

Lmao, seriously? Depending on where you are, in two years that person would miss out between $200-$500k. Just because someone is eligible to retire doesn’t mean that don’t like making money. I wouldn’t retire early to save your job. And that’s not how it works anyway. Sounds like you’re a low performer who is a looking for a scapegoat. Do your job, do it well, and you might be ok.

I will ever make life changing career decisions based on how those decisions affect your career. It is not, never has been and never will be my responsibility to do what is best for your poor career choices.

Go whine to someone else about your impending layoff.

I've been snoozing off at this company for 32 years. The chair that I sit is was new 2 weeks after I started. I eat in my chair, I f@rt in my chair, the wheels of my chair are the size of pencil erasers, the cloth of my chair is faded/worn out with no padding but it fits my bu-t perfectly. When I retire in another 8 years the chair will be thrown out. But it's my chair and it nor me are going anywhere anytime soon. I wouldn't know how to pass the time or gas if it wasn't for this chair. So pack up buddy, I'm retired IN MY CHAIR.
Signed,
Ron age 64

Not sure what the OP is crowing about. I have seen many of my older coworkers take a package at times of layoff when they were ready to leave, but if it isn't right, why would you subject your family to financial stress?

Also, I need to make enough money so that when I do leave, I don't have to deal with people like the original poster, who probably has no concept of how sh-t really works in this company. In AT&T, you don't know where all the bodies are buried until you have at least 3 years under your belt. You would be missing people like me if I left.

lifo means last in first out, union rules are already fair. att is not backfilling vacancies, in other words a vacancy will not save your job. getting laid off sucks, I was laid off as a young man in another industry. I switched industries, the employment market is always fluid you have to be as well, good luck

Because I’m fire proof. I can do as little as possible, get first pick of vacation and premium shifts, etc…and then guess what? The junior guy who does most of the work will get surplused and I will make even more money. Why retire when you can retire in place???

Most senior employees only need to concern themselves with only their family if applicable and themselves! Don’t you ever feel responsible for giving your job to a younger colleague in order to save theirs! They’re not yours or my responsibility. If T doesn’t care about the welfare of its employees, then neither should you or I.

Well, I like my job and I'm good at it. I have the best working knowledge of newer technologies in software development and deployment than any of the younger colleagues in my expanded work group. Also, I do not "owe" any of my younger teammates with respect to imminent retirement. As others have pointed out, inflation and gas prices have negatively impacted the economy, and many of us lost substantial value in our retirement portfolios. I plan to stay around for a few more years. If I get laid off, although certain to face age discrimination, at least I will have valuable skills to take with me. I spend a lot of time and effort in keeping up to date, and I plan to take advantage of that as much as possible. Younger colleagues are free to do the same. Age alone does not make someone more or less valuable.

I’ll tell the OP the same thing I told a few of the junior techs in my group when they brought this exact thing up……..If you think I am going to apologize to you for starting before you did, you have lost your mind. F with me and I’ll hang around longer than I intended too just to be a pr--k. Yes, I’m that petty. A lot of these new techs wouldn’t have made it when us old guys started. They would be looking for their safe space because the cr-p they get away with today wouldn’t have been tolerated by their peers or their managers in the past.

That is interesting as I have had the exact same experience. I am in my 40"s and I find the only loafers I see in our org are the new hires. Constantly texting, cannot miss going to the gym at lunch so can never join a noon call. They even miss mtgs as they block out their calendar between 12:00 and 1:30. When the new hire found out we have to work some weekends for code deployments they almost fell of their chair when they realized management does not get overtime. I had to hide my laugh when hearing his complaints. Oh and did I mention he is offline at 5:00 on the dot and I love it went senior management on rare occasion schedule a 5:00 or 5:30 call and wants us to be on video. LMAO

Hey OP.....put some time in.
I worked 95% of the Saturdays for 14 years. When I had a wedding I had to find someone who would take it for me. If I couldn't, I came in.
Often forced to work the Sunday after a week of vaca.
Didn't get a week a vacation when school was out for 9 years.
After I had enough time, I was able to work the late shift for another 3 years.
We had 40 year guys, some paying for kid's college, grandkid's prescriptions, handicapped parents, or whatever. They couldn't retire.
Your delusions of grandeur, arrogance, sense of entitlement and immaturity are exactly why you're in this situation.
Put your time in rookie.

I felt the way the OP in my first few years, but now, I'll leave when I need to.

I was a surplus victim in 2005. Several above me were ready to go and could have taken the VTP, but were expecting an added incentive package like the one Pac Bell got taken over by SBC.

They never did, all all retired without anything.

Just because I’m close to retirement doesn’t mean I can retire today. Trust me, wish I could. Still paying off mortgage and student loans. Worry about yourself, don’t pretend to know everyone’s situation.

My 401k match was company stock and shares were bought at $50/share down to $20/share. These are now worth $18/share. I foolish put some of my contribution into company stock. Well an over 50% loss on investment means I can't retire yet.

Everyone is supposed to care about themselves only! This is a telecommunications company and most sit behind a desk / computer. If you care about others more than yourself then take a pay cut and give it to new employees. Sigh.

The same people that are begging me to retire are the same people that claim they aren’t comfortable enough to do the jobs that I do. They are the same people that try to pick and chose their work and where they work. I personally have no concern with their situation with in the company and will never retire to save their job’s.

If the poster had half a brain they may be able to see the big common sense picture. Everyone has to start somewhere. How many of the boomers had to work weekend and holidays, regular shifts, simply because they were low in seniority. No vacation available again, because of low seniority. Now we’re at a place we don’t have to worry about the cr---y hours and shifts. Time for the next generation. So suck it ip buttercup. We’re staying!
