Just wondering. I come here once in a while to check on an old company I once worked at where I met a lot of nice people that I never keep in touch with but still care about. I was young and idealistic back then and thought I would make a career there. It turns out that I didn’t get picked for management for whatever reason and then I saw jobs get outsourced around me to India or Costa Rica, or somewhere else. I ended up leaving discouraged but at least now I make way more money than I ever could have at Emerson. I still have a place in my heart for the company but also some resentment for many of the same reasons I often see expressed here. So I guess for me it serves as a form of validation. In some ways I see it as emblematic of the death of one the last American manufacturing companies, consumed by the greed of an inner circle of hypocritical leaders who are really just out for themselves.

I was associated with “Emerson” for about 20 years. Well actually maybe half of that. The first 10 the company that Emerson acquired still had some sort of identity, but the last 10 the mothership made sure to ki-l all that remained of the culture.
I dealt with multiple managers who straight up treated me like sh-t. I transferred to a different division and thought things would be smooth sailing but boy was I in for a surprise. Things just kept getting worse and worse.
The reason I’m here is to tell my story and in the hopes that it helps either some people who are in the fence about leaving, or those who might be thinking in accepting a job offer. There are much better options out there. Although I must admit that I have starting to check this board less and less. Maybe someday Emerson will be a good place to work. But I doubt it.

When management decided to cede a great deal of scope to “Impact partners” I decided to bail.
When Emerson, the impact partner and customer were working together, Emerson did not advocate for its team. They handed scope over.
The way I look at it, Emerson prioritizes IPs over its own team.

It turned out that I didn’t get picked for anything higher for whatever reason though I upskilled myself again and again over long years (the more, the company did not support you on trainings and education, it was your private pleasure) and then I saw jobs get outsourced all around the world, well-seasond people sacked for no reason, and knowledge permanently diluted which made work more and more stressful.
I ended up being discouraged but in the meantime too old to start a good career somewhere else. Apart from that, the "family feeling" inside the location was still there, plus low communting time, and what is earning good money without good internal environment? I still have a place in my heart for the company - no, the people I know worldwide for long years! - but also some resentment for many of the same reasons I often see expressed here. In some ways I see it as emblematic of the death of one the last American manufacturing companies, consumed by the greed of an inner circle of hypocritical leaders who are really just out for themselves.
... and this is so sad. They are digging their own grave. And what is software more than just a tool? Trading production and know-how in for tools which would not work without hardware is just silly. Times will not stay like they are now - and then you need your hands-on. In country, and not somewhere else.
