Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Is it time to retire the WF brand?

What If we renamed the company? Removed all the stage coaches? I’m talking a real rebrand.Would that make the company any better?Just got to thinking that if somebody asked me where I worked I wouldn’t have to lower my head and whisper…

The brand may need to be retired after the fiasco in Boise, ID this week. WF was one of the bank sponsors of an event that included a "Drag Kids" things -- absolutely horrific. At least Zions Bank had the guts to withdraw their sponsorship. I haven't seen anything that says we did.

Regardless of your thoughts on "pride" overall, when it starts damaging kids that crosses a definitive line. How horrifically embarrassing to see our logo on this event.

It's in the works. Amazon is looking to offer banking services. The branches will be converted to Amazon return centers. WF will be Amazon Banking Services.

From their Wikipedia page:

The original Morgan Stanley, formed by J.P. Morgan & Co. partners Henry Sturgis Morgan (grandson of J.P. Morgan), Harold Stanley, and others, came into existence on September 16, 1935, in response to the Glass–Steagall Act that required the splitting of commercial and investment banking businesses.

It would be funny to be bought by a company formed out of JPM.

I was hoping we’d get bought out by Morgan Stanley. Finally, send the stage coaches to a chop shop. Better yet, move all the stage coaches to one building and use them as dining tables for a theme restaurant. Be sure to check your dining bill for additional charges, though…

I figured by now the WF name would have become Chase since they are quickly moving their folks in.

I remember the Norwest merger. The issues began long before Stumpf took over. Unfortunately, he just (blindly?) walked into the situation.

Oh! Also forgot retired the pony program and Jack the dog. Both were big hits in the branches and with people in offices.

A big deal voting on the name of the new pony, too, using biographies of real horses of the pony express days. Raffling off the 4ish foot ponies were big draws in the branches and local charity.

Oh, well.

I joined the company just about 10 years ago and remember Stumpf crowing in a Town Hall that WF had something like the 5th most valuable brand in the world. The Stagecoach was as recognizable as the Coke Polar Bear!

Then he brought it all down. I agree with the OP, retiring the brand not entirely the worst idea. Charlie has been nibbling around the edges of it since he got here. No more hot air balloon, no more history museums, severe cut backs on stagecoach events (parades, charity walks/runs), updated colors (hideous McDonald’s like red and gold), non-descript square instead of stagecoach, on and on. Pretty sure the calendars - except maybe the Chinese ones - are also gone.

I think it's possible, but they are probably waiting to get out from the asset cap or at least reduced government scrutiny. Otherwise, the new name will be tarnished quickly too

What do you think when you see these bank names..

Bank of America.. hidden locations, bail out bank, bad loans, blue, nothingness
JP Morgan... lots of high crimes, investment banking, founded by a guy with a giant red nose
Citi.. decrepit locations, international, bad loans
Wells.. gold rush, western movies, g-n slingers, stage coaches, red

I was thinking the same thing. I don’t care how much varnish they put on that stage coach. It’s just limping along.

As much as cynics would like to say otherwise, consumers generally have the memory of a turnip, so a full rebrand prolly would work eventually. Many companies have done it.
