How many applications is too many?

I've seen it posted here that hiring managers pay attention to how many jobs the internal applicant has applied for.

It makes sense why this is, but I'm wondering how many applications is "too many"?

I'm assuming it's not just the raw count; that it's how many applications within a certain timeframe? 10 applications in 6 months is seen differently than 10 applications in 2 weeks?

For recruiters and hiring managers out there, would you mind sharing what your threshold is for "too many" applications in how much of a timeframe?

Thanks much.

ear+1itnn8IV Yes. After many applications, and interviews, I did land a position with Citi.

I applied to 12 internal architect jobs and was in various stages of interviewing for a bunch. Then I accepted one and withdrew the others immediately to free them up for others ... but now I am out, got a much better offer outside of wells. See ya!

Yes, the hiring manager can see now, which is a change. Yes, it can potentially impact their decision (I have personally heard of that happening). But, no, that would not stop me from applying for any job that interests me. If it's not meant to be with one, perhaps two others you applied for will give you a shot. How you seek out a new role is based on your personal preference and philosophy. It should not scare off a hiring manager.

Yes, the manager can see how many jobs the person has applied for. I don't think it really matters though because the hiring manager isn't going to outright decline you (and can't directly) for applying for a lot of jobs.

I don't believe hiring managers can see how many positions you apply for, but recruiters definitely can.
Citi was always hiring, and if the position looked like something I had experience in, I would apply. I didn't care how many openings there were, I applied to each of them, if I were a fit. The recruiter would tell me, " I see you've applto several of our positions, but I am calling about this role ".
I think as long as you have the experience/background, it doesn't matter. Shows tenacity, at least.

The hiring manager can't see it but I think the internal recruiters can. They are the ones screening for the first interview and sometimes they take into account the shotg-nning of resumes.

I don’t know about the new system but in the old one I could see what jobs every candidate had applied to. No longer in a direct management role though so I couldn’t say how it is now, but as a hiring manager previously it was less about how many jobs a candidate applied for and more about what kinds of jobs they applied for. If someone was applying for everything under the sun just to see what would stick I took that as a red flag. The only reason someone does that is because they are either a horrible employee who will never be happy or they have a horrible manager they are trying to escape. It was impossible to know for sure which it was though so I just didn’t take the chance. Got burned too many times by candidate’s who seemed like good people in a bad place when it turned out they were just miserable people who would never be happy in any role.

I believe you used to be able to at least in the old system, but as a hiring manager I really don't care. with so many posting using cookie cutter descriptions and requirements there could be a bunch of openings you qualify for that are nearly identical so why not post for them.

Can hiring managers see how many applications you submitted to other roles? I thought only hr can see it.
