Band 3 Making $130K under 30 - Is it worth it to move up?

Hi Ya'll, I'm a band 3 engineer making $130K. I've been at Honeywell under 6 years, I'm under 30. Is it even worth it to move into a manager or band 4 engineering role? How much more does the pay go up, is it worth the stress? I want to have a family, spend time with them, and retire early.

My first two years at Honeywell I was treated like cr-p, I negotiated HARD given how difficult it is for managers to find good engineers. I got my salary up high, but how far ahead of the curve am I?

Can you help me fill-out the below, and then can you tell me if you think progressing further is even worth it?
E1: 70k
E2: 85k
E3: 100k
Sr: $130k
Lead: ??? + MIP of ?
Principal: ??? + MIP of ?
Fellow: ??? (I'm guessing something like a $225k) + MIP of ?

Thanks!

How to get big pay raises. Kiss a$$ , be the bosses best friend, cash in. Nothing new. Seen it in several departments and directorships. Go have beers after work, get a big 15% merit increase.

  • Document your duties in HOS
  • Mentor an Engineer from a COE Center of Excellence
  • Better yet, review any patent disclosures with the West for East strategy in China market
  • Fellows get lost in the org, simply look elsewhere unless you're a cradle to grave type
  • Finally, your role in retrospect has been documented and can be outsourced to a low-cost region.
  • Restructure that fixed cost indirect labor for H12023 and allocate to Executive bonus plan
  • bye bye Band 4

had a team member on B3 make over $140K, don't think they had any bonuses or incentives. no promotions....you get stuck at Honeywell.

I had a manager who doesn't even know the seniority levels, they thought Senior was higher than Lead or Principle, among the many other baffling incompetencies.

The vast majority of those making $250K up are in the management ranks. Technical line tops out around there, and there are very limited opportunities to advance that far.

Management jobs are simply different than technical ones. You will be required to align your thought process with executives, or you will not stay long. If that's your bag, it is the way to go. If not, stay technical and understand the limitations. Most engineers do the latter.

Do not stay at honeywell. You have learned what you can and will learn and grow more in a different company. Go and come back in a few years if you want.

If you have a conscience, I would not recommend the management route. I left in Sr Management because I was losing sleep and it was impacting my health. You will be asked (told) to put people on PIPs that you know shouldn’t be.

Ignore the negativity and do move into management. The advice you have received is correct. Congratulations on moving faster than many if us!

B4 = RIF bait.

I’m a Lead Eng, and MIP dropped to 5% across GBE. 2020 and 2021MIP was dropped to 65% of that target (not performance related). If you are B3 and already making 130K, then it’s not worth it…

MIP is 10% for Lead and Principal, 15% for Fellow. It is unlikely you will ever make Fellow as they have tightened that up significantly. It you stay on the technical ladder you will be stuck at Principal forever with increases that don’t even cover inflation. The management track is the only way to advance.

I would go the management route, your advancement path is pretty long and if you are really good it can be very lucrative. Go for it and do not listen people who tell you that mgmt sucks.
