Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Internal hiring has become a joke…

In the last few months I have applied for various lead control and business execution consultant roles which I am well qualified for. I’ve been here 18 years with 10 years in risk and control. Suddenly I am being rejected for everything…out of all of them I had two screenings but didn’t go any further. This is much different than just a few years ago when I last looked for a role. Then I had so many internal interviews that I couldn’t keep up and basically used the same resume as now. It’s super frustrating to see all these roles posted but feel that it’s not even worth applying for. Anyone else having the same issue?

“ I heard from a former co-worker that they were starting to block transfers in the Controls, Risk, and Audit space because they were losing too many people.”

Block transfers, as in no one gets to leave??? Yikes.

That's correct. I was looking to transfer out of second line risk to front line and that's when my co-worker told me what was going on. I ended up resigning, accepted a 100% remote role in the front line that pays 20% more base salary and overall 60% more in bonuses and RSU. I was already at the top of the pay band for my role at WF.

@3fjm

LOB specific, each group has hubs they will hire in. The common ones seem to be mpls, stlouis, charlotte, des moines, nyc

What locations are considered hub locations these days?

Same. Unfortunately, location is my roadblock. After working for the company for over 20 years, I'm suddenly unable to make any moves because I don't live near one of the new hub locations. I've applied for jobs that the hiring manager has agreed I am qualified for and even if the entire team is remote, I'm still withdrawn by the recruiter because I don't live within 2 hours of one of the 6 newly designated locations.

I enjoy the preferential treatment I receive.

You would too if you got it, so don't get resentful at me, bub.

Most of the Indian team members are using wf job as a live project training to learn, practice and try outside for a better package job. This place became a Ameerpet live training center. Thanks to chain shaw/mr.cool and his team for outsourcing all work to India.

It does feel ALOT harder these days to move internally. I had a friend who moved 3 or so times internally about 7-10 years ago. Now it’s impossible to even get a recruiter to respond to you in a timely manner (even a rejection).

One of the supposed perks of being at a large company is being able to move and grow your career within the company. I am a diverse candidate too and haven’t really seen any transparency as to why I am not selected for roles.

True story: I left WF after applying to 12 internal jobs in a year. As a senior manager , I had the relevant experience and smarts. With three years at Wells, I thought I could easily bag an internal director-level job. After 12 job rejections within a year, a competing bank offered me a senio job and an increase of 25%. I politely thanked all 12 job posters for rejecting me . I check this forum from time to time . It has been 7 months since I left Wells and I am pretty happy .

Consider trying to find someone to help you do a resume review, maybe a trusted manager who does a lot of hiring. Also make sure that your resume is using the exact same wording for your skills and experience that the job description has: don’t make any assumptions that they know that two things are the same, because if it’s a different area of the company, it might not be the same. I edit my resume for every job that I apply for. Good luck!

I'm a white male and have had no problem getting 1st, 2nd,.and 3+ round interviews. while we all want to think we are the best candidate that isn't always the case and there are plenty more candidates that are probably better than you. like any other company or job site, it can be a numbers game, just keep applying and eventually a fish will bite.

The poster didnt imply anything - you inferred it so thats on you.

The point is that race should not be a factor in hiring at all.

Not me, I applied and was called two weeks later, now moving on the second interview.
Do you follow up with the HR person? Most are useless unless prodded.

Also if resumes are not formatted properly or using weird fonts, the programs will not read the resume properly. Tons of info out there on linkedin or tiktok on resume formats and keyword usage. Spend some time learning the nuances or you are just wasting effort.

@hhb+1iggOB7r really shouldn't have expected any thought to go into the process, should I?

If you are not updating your resume with keywords from the actual job posting that’s your first problem. Most firms, including WFA, use a computer filter to look for keyword matches to approve the resume to move forward. Not enough “hits” and you don’t move forward.

I could've written this post. Hiring is a joke, but not as big of a joke as retention.

@ixx+1iggOB7r - yeah, the problem now is that when the color of your skin is now a core consideration, we don't know how 'qualified' one truly is.

How would a recruiter even know based on a resume only, the race/gender of the applicant?

Just because a person is a diversity candidate doesn't mean they are low to mid performer. You may not have meant to say this, but that's what was implied in your post.

Wells Fargo just made the news for conducting sham interviews with diverse candidates when they'd already decided on a "non-diverse" candidate. Seems to me they are still hiring white males

I'm in the exact same boat. I get interviews, but then nothing happens. Sometimes I'll see that they eventually end up hiring a cheaper candidate (younger or cheaper location) or they'll hire a diverse candidate, but other times the posting will just sit there idle in Open status for months.

Oh, so despite the fact that I am a white female, with a picture in the system I should self identify as another race….lol, that should work out well….

You need to know how to "play the game". It will help to recognize that we live in a different world today, and the rules of the game have changed.

One rule is that you must have as many DE&I boxes checked as possible. That is the new scorecard in today's culture.

So what do YOU need to do to get a job that you're already qualified for...? First, you need to stop playing the game by yesterday's rules. You need to self-identify for as many of those DE&I checkmarks as you can.

Doesn't matter if they're true or not - the important thing is that you play the game by today's rules.

I have the same problem. I am a white male who has worked with the bank for 8 years. Senior Lead and Management roles. The only people I am seeing that are making moves are diversity candidates. Let the bank continue to play their games and hire people who are low to mid level performers. The superstars are not leaving out groups.
