Sabbatical?

I know in the past it was allowed (by special arrangement with mgmt and HR) to take up to six months off as a sort of mental health leave. Is this still possible? Has anyone done it lately? Was it paid or unpaid?

Thanks!

I spoke to EAP a few times about my issues at work. I guess my situation was bad enough because the EAP manager actually said to me, “I don’t do this, however, I really think you need to go on medical leave.” Eye opener? Yes. I followed his advice. If you feel you need it, trust your gut and take the time off.

make sure to touch base with EAP and let them know what your situation is so that they know why you need the “sabbatical”. They usually would refer you to a therapist and the doctor takes it from there. It’s always just good to have it on your HR record that you consulted with EAP in addition to the HR business rep, your manager and your doctor(s). CVX likes to see “back up info” and not just see you take off and disappear for six months. Note: At least that’s what they expected before the major reorg season hit CVX…maybe now they don’t care…?

Several payrolls have a required six month sabbatical built-in. Australia is one example. Paid six months or 12 months off every ten years.

There’s only a one-way sabbatical that’s available right now. It’s available for anyone. Take it and DON’T COME BACK.

For extended paid time off, you need a doctor to order that your mental health prevents you from working, then you follow the disability management process via the reed group. It’s paid time off, up to the amount in your short term disability bank. Or, you can go the route of unpaid leave of absence which just needs supervisor approval but there is no job guarantee or protection.

Yes, go ahead and take that 'sabbatical' and get your 'mental health' issues (i.e., six month vacation) taken care of. Be aware that you'll also advance to the top of the list for the next layoff round!

I'm not talking about the official policy. This was always under the table as far as I know. Management agreed that Joe Blogs was over-stressed and could use 3-6 months time off.

Six months away from the job stagnates your job skills. Ask any woman who has taken an extended maternity leave.

Six months? Well I suppose so. In my day we didn’t get that stuff! You had problems at home deal with it. That’s just me. Here’s what I’d imagine they do. Depending on your work standing. One you’d get six months off with no pay with no guarantee of your job being there when you get back. Two if they want you back you’d most likely go on short term disability for 3 to 6 months forget which. Then long term disability. Stay strong.
