Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

AT&T OSP Engineer positions at Contractors in West (PacBell) and SE (BellSouth)

I was surprised that not only does AT&T use contractors for construction, they also use contractors for OSP Design & Engineering. No wonder there have been no openings in the OSP Engineering department with a lot of long time management retirements and package offers/volunteer exits.

Not sure where you are located. I am in the Chicago area and they have hired at least 20 new engineers in the past year.

Where have you been? They've been contract engineering for a decade at least. Some of the internal engineers are almost QC at this point.

& the current ones don’t design anything. Just QC what the contractors draw.

There is currently a hiring freeze which means you won't see any job reqs posted for openings. The west needs help, but is forced to do without because of the freeze. Not sure if or when it will be lifted.

No wonder I haven't been able to get an OSP Engineering job. I've been sitting here waiting for an opportunity. How can I fight this and get a job?

They aren’t supposed to be using contractors for actual hands on construction work in the SE. If they are they are violating the union contract.

The future is contractor service model via MSA which pays those suppliers per the job. Helps bottom line with payroll and benefits saving with reduced headcount.

The Union keeps getting rolled in the west. They don't fight, they just talk. No use in paying dues.
