Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Facts

It's more likely to get struck by lightning than get a promotion at AT&T if you don't have somebody looking out for you. Nepotism and cronyism for the win!

Or you finally get that promise of promotion to L3 and they put the rec on hold due to hiring freeze.

It is far too much hassle for your manager to get you a promotion. The only way you can get a promotion is to move to a different job at a higher title/pay.

Look at the bright side, Stankey and Stephenson somehow got promoted, so you've got a chance. If those two losers were never promoted AT&T would be a much better place today.

I cringe when someone in corporate world uses terms like “leadership” and “true leadership.” If you never served, you have no clue what that is. Last I checked very few at the top ever served. you want to know what true leadership looks like? Read up on Richard Winters, Charles Whittlesee, Chesty Puller, etc.. not Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, they are the antithesis of what true leaders are.

“Promotions are not on past performance but future potential.” Sure you may have been a s##t hot individual contributor but are a pain no one wants to work with, much less for? Then there’s the judgment of higher management, who can be just as clueless and unaware of any potential. Job hop if you can’t get that promotion. What do you want, security or upward mobility? You find yourself where you deserve to be…

Poor guy, cries of nepotism and cronyism every time you get passed over. Maybe it's you?

tell management what they want to hear, lead, get others to follow you, make problems go away. If you like swimming in sewage go for it. most managers I’ve known don’t really like it

Of course you need someone looking out for you. If you can't build that type of relationship, you will fail as a manager.

A nice phrase comes to mind for some that are always called on to lead projects, get stuff done, goes above and beyond, always the top performer. You know what that phrase is? Too valuable to production.

Getting promoted in management is not hard work, extra hours, and stellar performance. It’s networking, social skills and/or connections. That it. Everyone at the top likes to think they worked “hard” and “performed” to get there and that may be true, but not in the same way as those under them work hard. Their hard work was knowing and being known by the right folks. The actual “work” part was not the focus. You have to do the work, but not be too good. Sad but true.

This post is obviously regarding "management classification" jobs and the 2 facts are:

  1. In management you get "hired in" at the level you desire, almost everyone in management leaves the company (retire or resign) at the same level they were hired at.
  1. The exception is if you can check a box that helps fill a needed qu0ta.

In management, people these days "hire up" from company to company. That is why there are very few knowledgeable and experienced managers in their field. (and by experienced I don't mean a measly couple of years, I mean truly expert, 20 or 25 years or more.

If you are wanting to get promoted, it's not about how well you do your job. It requires you to have the ability to network and exhibit true leadership skills. First step would be joining mentor program along with executive sponsor on your side.

They never promised you a rose garden. Employees like you are a dime a dozen. Think you know it all and deserve to be promoted to SVP. Get a life, you are no better than the position you are in now. Promotions are not passed out like candy. You have to earn it.
