Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Headcount reduction

I am surprised by how many people think that the company has to cut more people in order to be more competitive and survive. Do you really think that major headcount reductions are the only way to keep the company afloat? What are the arguments? Hasn't ATT already lost too many good people?

Blah, blah, blah, blah blah! Nobody on this website knows a damn thing about the future of AT&T! It's all speculation at best! Just sit back, hang on to to your shorts cuz it's gonna get bumpy! Perhaps, not this year, but at the very least over the next 16 months or so!
Nobody knows for certain!

cutting alone has a very likely chance of making things a lot worse ...
T is getting cornered on one side from a demanding job market (gen X,Z just won't take this cr-p) like some, not many, of my generation takes with a smile
on another from pressure to be financial viable
on another from rising interest rates - how long we can stay viable considering the debts
T needs an absolute revolution - where fat is trimmed clean, remaining employees are super motivated (obviously pay plays an important role in that), they have a career path forward and leadership is not made of retired military people - all respect for our heroes, but they can't run a business with GEN X, Y, Z non military folks

Layoffs are a necessity ... but when done without thinking (and I've seen a lot of that) better not do them at all

Stankey and Pascal have painted T into a corner. The only way to make 3Q numbers is to layoff. They need a quick and dirty way to balance the books!

You can put here any date and all can "make sense". This is funny childish game for mo--ns without any valid information.

The Oct 3 date makes sense because it gives them 8 weeks before an off payroll date before 11/30. There will be a craft surplus announced on 9/15 and the affected first levels have been aware of the final numbers since 9/1, although they aren’t allowed to leak any info until the union releases the info.

"AT&T CFO Pascal Desroches Updates Shareholders:
Desroches reiterated expectations for improved cash conversion in 2023 compared to 2022 ...include the benefits from continued transformation savings."

So that's only one official mention about possible layoffs. All other are just mere speculations. No after Labour day bloodbath, no 9/15 masacre.

Area managers are as clueless about layoffs as they are about their own job functions! Don’t believe anything they tell you since they’re usually the last to know in the communication chain!

since the unions signed the contract they can get rid of more management since they don't need them to work the strikes.

Interesting you brought up a Wireless self service model. When is the last time anyone has gone into one of our stores, bought a phone and had it activated in that store. Buy online, pop in SIM card, transfer info and never leave the house.

The main reason is Toxic-T has the Megalomaniac Stink running amuck! The Stink so enjoys messing up Shareholders, Customers and Employees and the incompetent BoD rewards the Stink with multiple million bonuses when they should have fired him years ago.

  • Less products to sell require less employees.
  • Stock is tanking, headcount is an easy way to increase revenue for shareholders.
  • We have no vision to increase revenue in the near or long term.
  • T is automating everything, requiring less employees.
  • Wireless is going to a self service model, less employees will be needed.
  • T cannot afford to buy its way to prosperity, so less benefits, less pay, less employees and less overall perks will be the future.

We have 6 techs on my crew.
We maybe do one job a day a piece.
The rest of the time we drive around looking "busy" to the GPS gods, wasting gas, and getting paid.
The boss says nothing, because with techs, he has no job.
It's a great gig for high 5 figures a year.

Headcount reduction is needed to stay competitive with Verizon and TMo, as they have a higher revenue per an employee.

The issue I have is first why did ATT hire so many more people only the lay them off and still not perform that well in the market. The leaders are screwed up because first they hire too many people and then lay them off and take away people livelihoods. We have a leadership issue with ATT.

Could we expect that so called leaders are able to do something different? Of course a simplifaication of a portfolio of products will cause layoffs. Maybe we will be surprised as with the 'new age 2020' - all those plans will be dismissed repeatedly and ATT will make itself entertainmet company again.

They have no other choice. Headcount rationalization is the quick and dirty way to reduce expenses which will increase profits at T. They can only pull this lever a limited number of times before it's no longer effective. You can not cut your way to success in any company, at some point you have to increase revenue.

They may not need it, but they love to sc--w with employees lives, and so do the people in HR.
