A large part of divestiture and Judge Greene ruling in 1983 was that any Bell companies were forever prevented from inventing any products or services. So, all the successful companies were then and still are now, by law, totally dependent on other companies for any new inventions and products.
AT&T retained ownership of Bell Labs then (1983) and still has ownership of Bell Labs today. I only bring that up because after divestiture, AT&T set itself on a downward spiral with stupid purchases (sound familiar?) of NCR and other companies and doing failed start-ups of other companies, LUCENT for example. The other names escape my memory but the companies have long since gone by the wayside.
AT&T and the companies it bought and started have been failing since the first day of divestiture so I can completely understand why nothing significant from Bell Labs has come to fruition.
Now, since SBC purchased the failing AT&T which owned Bell Labs I'm not really sure how the laws that bar invention or product development by any Bell companies would come into play but since nothing has come from Bell Labs for so long this ruling appears to now be moot.
Since divestiture I really can't remember any significant invention by Bell Labs. I'm sure they probably contributed to some fiber advancements but like a previous poster stated "The transistor." is the last truly significant invention that I can think of also.
Can't read? 14.5K no $ signs - that is why I said outlets. People only see what they want to.
Tuxedo
$14.5K? You do realize our debt stands at $135B, right?
Whine all you want but my division just singed a 13.5k retail outlet deal and looks like another 1k soon. So many venues so much $ flowing in and these are in addition to the huge accounts we already have.
UNIX and before that the transistor by Bell Labs decades ago
Easy. The Wireless Administrative Fee. It's an extra charge for wireless customers, to offset the costs of delivering wireless service!

seriously what is your problem and why are you whining like a little B1tch?
When T tries to invent, it always succumbs to top-down decision making. The top being a C-suite full of business school bozos with no subject matter expertise.
Example 1: Project AirGig
Example 2: HBO Max
Example 3: AT&T Integrated Cloud (AIC)
Example 4: Domain 2.0
Example 5: .......
The 'New' AT&T, AFAIK hasn't invented anything worthwhile. Tons of patents, too many of which document obvious processes. Why they do this, haven't any idea.
Project AirGig, can't really say invent, although it is an interesting idea. Too bad, it appears to have been mothballed, as no news stories about it in a few years
