Or at least that's what it seems to me. The biggest reason why many stay here is that they can't find something else that doesn't involve a paycut, but also more work. I wish I wasn't right... The reason why many have allowed themselves to stagnate here and in the meantime become unmarketable is hard to understand.

I looked for something better for years and had many offers, the difference was T was a more stable company and of course, the pension wasn't offered at other companies. When you're complacent, you get lazy! The opportunities are definitely out there, it's all a matter of your age, tenure and overall goals within and outside of AT&T. You have to look at the big picture. If I was in my twenties, I would get out of T ASAP and find another company that doesn't have the constant threat of layoff every quarter of every year!
problem is at&t has made up jobs that dont exist in other tech companies -union stuff sure go ahead and life 50 lbs on a moving truck
Agreed about staying for the pension if that is better for you, however, if completing pension requirements is not a concern, and no matter what business you work for,
shouldn't most anyone leave where they are for somewhere better??
To me, better has different factors for each person, some would feel more time off is better, some would feel business travel is better, some would feel a different city is better, some would gladly work for 5 dollars/hour as long as they had a big expense account they could brag about, some would gladly move if they could have a big inflated important sounding job title, some would move if they could have more job security, some would move for a job that would never require overtime, some would move for the opportunity for unlimited overtime...... etc..
It only makes sense to me that most everyone would change if they find someplace better...
Non technical folks do have a tough time. Call centers are overpaid, phone stores are overpaid, many order writers, etc are expired.....sux but true.
I just accepted an offer from another company and it feels amazing.

If you want to marketable to other companies, it is on YOU to develop the skill set necessary to move to the job you want to. Stagnating at any company is a possibility. I stay at T, because I have a pension and a decent salary. If I wanted to do something else, I would do it. I am good at my job, so why move? If the company wants to lay you off, they will give you 2 weeks pay for every year, giving you time to pivot.

I get a pension, the job is way too easy, good pay, stress free and weekends off! Sure I have low skillset, but you don't need skills working for T. I'm gonna stay til they boot me out!
Most T employees end up staying due to lack of current skillset.
Sounds to me like you wouldn't stay but you can't find another job elsewhere because you have stagnated here.
The main reason why many stay is the pension. You must not be pension eligible, otherwise you would understand the play.
I’m not a tech, but if I were and pension eligible, I would stay here until the kicked me out and/or I got really bored and decided I wanted to fish more.
The company created the rules, and a lot of folks are taking advantage of it….good for them!
As I always say, if you don’t have a pension, why are you here? There’s no future at T.
A ten year employee won’t see retirement here, regardless of occupation.

Retired in December. Wasn’t sure if I wanted to go back to work and Wasn’t sure what I’d find. Surprisingly enough I found something better much better in terms of compensation and culture, it took a few months and interview preparation. When I retired I was a GM- I make more money with less responsibilities.
I can become as unmarketable as I desire 34 years in. Hardly any work for me as an outside tech. Yet plenty of OT. You should quit. I'll do a few more years.
