Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

I wonder why more people are not quitting

With so many complainers, you'd think more of them would be looking for new jobs so they could escape the horrible situation at AT&T. Yet when you look at attrition, it's about the same (low) levels as it has always been. What's the point in staying somewhere you're unhappy? If that were me, I'd be long gone.

They can’t keep wire/prem techs on the payroll I believe the signing bonus is up to around $7k now a days.

ATT already laid off or rebadged its best workers. Those left are mediocre or want to settle.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'm retired now, but when I was working there, it wasn't broke.

Where I work techs are in high demand. I don’t understand people who post about technical skills lacking. We have customers constantly offering our techs jobs.
I’m in Sales and if I could leave with my pension today I would do it in a heartbeat. I get no less than 3 offers a year to leave and double my base pay.
There’s definitely a market for some T employees.

I think if you're waiting for a package and one is not coming, but you have the opportunity to leave and improve your employment status with another high profile technical company, then don't hesitate. On the flip side of that argument, you can also assume that since the nations economy is heading into the danger zone and layoffs are imminent,
you might want to ride it out! It's a difficult call at this time. If you take another job elsewhere, who is to say you won't get surplussed there!I think it also depends on you age and what amount of financial responsibility you have. I wish you all the very best either way!

Most T employees are stagnate in their positions and are no longer as marketable as they would like to be. They're stuck at T not only because they're a little long in the tooth, but also because of their lack of skills that can be used at another company. If you're a technician, that's one thing, but if you sit behind a desk, you might want to improve your marketability!

Most of us are waiting on a package offer.

Most employees with over 10 years at T don't have technical skills currently in demand and are not competitive for current job openings. Where would most go?

Just maybe those who complain the most, don’t have the ability to get a job elsewhere.

Why quit when I can do the absolute bare minimum to not get fired and collect that hourly and commission

If you're smart and (more importantly) have a backbone to stand up for yourself, you know exactly where the bar is that your union will protect you and your management cant cross. If you're not sure where the bar is, you'd be surprised how low it is. I've been doing it for over a decade, never once been disciplined. The biggest advice I can give anyone is stop falling for all their fear tactic bu-----p. Most of the threats they make are "technically" Illegal, but it's not even worth your time bringing up that fact to then because they ALSO know they can't do jack about it if you don't do what they say.

Like I said, do your research, sig through your union handbook and CSP (or CCKM or whatever they want to call it now) and you'll be surprised just how much of your job they threaten you with saying is "required" is in actuality 100% voluntary

Why "try" for a company that continues to take commission and benefits and continues to put up barriers for retail staff to sell against online and through customer service.

If the company wants me gone, they're gonna have to severance me out. Which I'll gladly take, but not one second before.

I'll keep riding the money train on that thin line between required and absolutely voluntary for years to come if I have to

Those with pensions will stay. It’s too much money to leave in the table.
The question is, why would anyone without a pension stay? It will be a very long time before the company recovers from past mistakes.

In management levels.. the younger folks - who are really good… but don’t check enough diversity boxes (female and non white)… are leaving in droves. The older folks are just hanging on until retirement…. If you think things are bad now… just wait until only the mediocre remain…
