If a person is motivated and productive they will get the job done regardless where they are sitting. If not, they will be in the gym for a few hours, lunch, coffee breaks and shooting the breeze in the hallway if at work and everyone knows this and knows who the real workers are.

Musk can't be talking about AT&T. Our remote management employees are furiously cranking out the PPT decks and multi-megabit Excel workbooks at least as fast as they ever did, which is all the more amazing considering they're somehow doing it while their Outlook calendars always show them continuously on calls for two weeks in advance. Elon obviously underestimates the power to motivate the peons wielded by corporate superheros like John Stankey and his direct reports.
I think people will sc--w around just as much at the office as they would at home. Some people are productive at home and some are better at the office. Unfortunately some that work at home will end up taking advantage of it and end up ruining it for everyone.

Elon is a business genius, but this is utter bollocks. Plenty of people goof around all day while in the office, and plenty of remote workers are heads down 8+ hours of the day.
Pretty spot on! There are some members on my team who can never be reached on days they WFH.

Elon thinks that every single person should have the same driven always working work ethic he has! Everyone is an individual and he has no right to tell Americans how they should work outside his company. He should go back to south Africa and stay there for good! Nobody cares about his opinion! It's the usual problem: A few bad apples ruin it for everyone else.
Plus, executives and their egos get used to having a building full of people under their control, sucking up to them all day, every day. That's probably the real reason for RTO at so many businesses.
