I know most of my generation is gone (through layoffs and retirement) and that means not many of you will know what I'm talking about, but I remember when AT&T was one of the best employers around. I remember when we were proud to work here because we were known for the quality of our offerings and not for scandals, failed acquisitions, and layoffs. I remember when we were considered assets and treated as such. I miss those days all the time.

T has been laying off their personnel regularly since the breakup in 1984. Since that time, year after year, T reduced head count in one area of the business or another. It will continue to do so because they have been trying to right the course, but never seems to achieve their goals. It's unfortunate and sad to see how a one time great company has been treated like their personal ATM machine.
If you’ve been at T that long, you are part of the problem. By staying around through all of these decades of issues, we have endorsed them as managers. You need to learn to be comfortable with that.
Was a part of those days. We were the only game in town. Remember threatening customers if we found out they had plugged up non Bell equipment to our network. Now you can go to Walmart and get service. Technology has turned this into a different world.
I’m old enough to remember when we actually have a cr-p about the customers. That was a long, long time ago.
I think Stink did the company a big disservice with his "No one is safe" and "Loyalty to the company means nothing" mantras.
Legecy ATT has been the same since the late 80's. Bring in some hot shot exec, wack a whole bunch of people, pull their golden parachute, and move on to ruin some other company. The only difference is that back in those days, you got up to two year severance, not two weeks severance. And of course you got the old pension, before T stole the pension.
I started with Bellsouth Mobility 30 years ago. I really miss those days also. People used to be impressed when I told them where I work. I used to look forward to going to work and gave 110% effort. Today, I do it just for the money and health insurance and give enough effort to stay under the radar. Looking forward to retirement in a few years.
