Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Return to Office

Legg is about to send out new rules that will require everyone to be back in the office 3 days per week. It will say everyone has to be in the office on Monday and Tuesday plus one other flexible day every week.

I’m sure the same will be true for Business-CS&O management employees as well. Anyone who is set as a Flex worker will be required to spend at least a couple of days in the office which is fine by me. The good thing about going into the office is that When I do, I work those specific hours sitting in a cubicle with no one else around doing the same thing as I do from the house. Nobody to collaborate with at either location. When it’s time to pack up and leave the office, I do just that and don’t look back. They actually get less from me when I do go in because of the commute time both ways. That time is usually spent working every day.

Business Services in their imbecilic wisdom said that we have to report to the office just when the pandemic started. Many of us were working from home, but no sooner than the pandemic started, they put the kibosh on working from home and said that we now have to report to the office. Can you imagine the managerial stupidity in AT&T that dictates the opposite of what the rest of the company was doing, working from home during the pandemic! Just goes to show how how T lower level managers from L1-L2 are uneducated more often than not, bitter that they aren't making as much as their bargained for subordinates and impose the most ludicrous rules imaginable because of
their jealousy!

Left in 2021 - I let my team work at home pre-pandemic even when our VP was suggesting everyone was in the office 4 days a week. I had team members on both coasts and everywhere in between and our business partners were distributed all over. So making them drive an hour+ to sit in an open area with no team members in that location to join calls made no sense. I told them if asked i could justify it based on business need. Never was asked because the work was done and escalations were rare. Not all my team was working at home primarily but I had folks in CA that would join calls at 6am their time because they were a key participant. Oh I also had team members working off hours or weekends in addition to their m-f. My advice to those that are forced to return to the office: set an 8 or 9 hour calendar and don’t accept meetings or work outside of that time. Don’t take calls on the weekends or in the middle of the night because offshore can’t do their job. Fwiw, I always went into the office, but I got most of my real work done in the early morning at home because there were too many distractions. I worked in Dallas and probably averaged 1 face to face meeting a month.

If the company direction is for the workforce to return to the office then all "management classification" employees should demonstrate their support for company policy, lead the way, lead by example, be the first ones back in the office full time and never work from home again..... They should set the example for non-management.... Oh, wait.... It's the management classified employees that are doing all the whining,,,,, yep, there is a real and substantial leadership problem here...

Musk order to his engineers to be back in the office for ‘at lest 40 hrs a week or else’ is disrespectful. He wants to create a ‘labor camp’ for his employees. I hope he loses many talented people. I have harsh words for Musk. Hope other leaders of tech companies will not follow this super rich clown.

I feel that no consideration is being given to the employees at T. Telecommuting is considered a must for most of the millenials and gen-Z's, the company is making a big mistake by mandating RTO. Sometimes I think C-suite and/or Stankey can't see the forest for the trees. Where are we with implementing a four day work week? Seems like a no brainer, we value our time off much more than baby boomers.

"Working from home has been widely abused by employees and there is a long overdue backlash loaded and ready in leadership’s mind. "

How about you cite your source for this claim that wfh has been widely abused?

I spent 10 years rotating weekly on call duty with three other admins. No comp time, no wage compensation. Learned quickly to telecommute. Sometimes up all night, server down, replacing defective components, installing patches, and performing OS and application upgrades. T got their pound of flesh, I used telecommuting to even the slate.

This is a troll post. Given the current inflation this would be even more expensive than usual, and most teams are geographically dispersed. However Crazy Elon’s RTO email has wide spread support in the C-suites of America. Expect additional metrics on surveillance including VPN, keyboard activity, COU tracking, and even mandates on video on during calls. Working from home has been widely abused by employees and there is a long overdue backlash loaded and ready in leadership’s mind. Please adjust behavior accordingly. Do your job, don’t get swept up in bs. (I’m looking at you, joe, you active trader).

I think McFluffy was taking liberties with the truth. He tends to hedge everytime bad news needs to be delivered. He doesn't want to be the bad cop!

McFluffy said at his town hall that no return to work decision has been made so I call this out as bs. They wouldn't make one division have to return and another not.

I telecommute, with the price of gas and the high cost of lunch it's not hardly worth returning to the office. Not sure how I will be able to keep up with laundry, cutting grass, preparing meals, and cleaning house. I can't afford to go back and I can't afford to not return. I was hoping to get my last 10 years in working from home, oh well.

You best stock up on toilet paper and bring in your own supply, as GRE leaves the stalls bare - or be able to hold it in for 8 hours. The gas station across the street is cleaner. Stink must live up to his reputation.

I will never go back, I see this as an idle threat. No way the company will enforce this with the current labor shortage. I say let's call their bluff.

When I worked for Christopher T. Rice he edicted NO work from home. Now he didn't mind that I was on call 24/7 - but need to come to work AND if you need to support the field you had to come to work & get a company car. On a few occasions I'd get a call from afar needing me to go in and help fix a service affecting issue and at midnight I didn't have access to the company car key. On one occasion the company car (shared amongst 250+ of us was out) and I refused to use my personal car especially since the Big CTR edicted that we could not use our personal cars (as we might just go home from our support job instead of reporting back to work location which might be 40 miles away).
Rice was a CLOWN! Most of our leadership would be shot in the back from friendly fire if this was war.

I wouldn't be surprise about this regressive move. T executives consider people working in the office as a productivity metrics. Do you actually get more work done? No one cares, that is not how the game is played. Badge swaps can be counted easily, done.

go away Troll, this is not a policy coming, they have reduced real estate and don't have enough room for everyone to be in office, they did reclass alot of people to TW so those folks don't need to go in. The people that are FTO and FOW want to be in the office and have been coming back in, so go back to your troll lounge and stop getting people all fired up :)

Legg is much more generous than Elon. Elon is mandating 40 hours per week in the office no remote work locations permitted. How long until Jeremy turns the screws and mandates 40 hours in the office with no remote work locations? Maybe a month!
