Thread regarding Saudi Aramco layoffs

Aramco is hiring ... BIG TIME

Seems management couldn't wait to get rid of expats at $40 oil. At $80, the employment door has swung wide open! The only problem is that now not so many ex employees have good things to say about the company. When I joined Aramco, it was because I knew someone there who recommended it. It is one thing to take a bad job in one's home Country, quite another to travel half way around the world for one. Someone needs to tell management that employee goodwill is an asset, even if it doesn't appear on the balance sheet. The company has basically used up its employee goodwill, and now it is finding out how hard it is to get good people without it. Not to mention the good people that left because they got disgusted with the work culture.

FWIW, I really don't wish the Saudis bad. I hope you guys step up because it looks like you are going to have to. Of course, that would require management to reward Saudis without wasta for skills they have and hard work they do. That wasn't happening when I worked for Aramco, and I don't image that it is going to start anytime soon.

In two days there's one more recruitment fair for unconventional department and they can provide really good offers. Currently almost 400 job postings in severall fields but government visa restrictions and extremely & unnecessary complex process creates a big bottle neck, kingdom is struggling now to increase production, specially gas and also young and well connected Saudis are departing to Neom projects.

I had a couple of friends who were hired. Same GC and more or less same position. Only that the salary was 10% less than in 2013. I guess benefits are going down as well.

I saw Aramco outsourcing in action. They laid off some expats, one of who was truly excellent, because said employees had a morale problem. Management decided it would be easier to just outsource. A year and a half later, they are bringing in valuable people from other areas (that really can't spare them) to keep the function going internally.

Outsourcing only makes sense if you have clearly defined inputs and outputs and good communication. Anybody who thinks this exists anywhere at Aramco is crazy. Every day, there are unrecognized employees who sort out Aramco dysfunctional mess by doing way more than they are being given credit for doing. Morale is low because their efforts aren't even being acknowledged let alone rewarded, and management thinks the solution to this is outsourcing. If you think that packing up and moving half way around the world to work in this kind of environment is a good idea, all I can do is shake my head and wish you good luck.

Working at Aramco used to be pretty good, but those years are slowly going by the wayside. Departments that used to great are being outsourced. The Company is following a strategy of sourcing labor from the most cost-effective sources. Many expats from the US were never a good value in the first place.

So if they are hiring in 2022, which year will they be laying off these new hires? 2023? 2024? What’s the betting?

That’s probably because all those who quit were forced to comply with the demand “says it family reasons or well make you life he-l trying to get out of here…..”

Think I’m joking? Ask any reputable HR person (if you can find one!) and 99.9% of leavers are due to “personal family/domestic” reasons. The other 0.1% have reached retirement age!

Reputation Management is not Aramco’s best skill, yet they always mark themselves outstanding at it in their enterprise risk management system. The place always seems to lurch from one direction to another like a rudderless boat in a storm and that’s when they are sailing in placid waters…God help them…

Not only was the company shedding expats at $40 they are now losing barrel loads of expats who have had enough. You get what you pay for indeed - but at present the Saudi dollar is not enough to tempt those who have heard all the rumours/facts about how it no longer is a good move.. The money can be good - if you make sacrifices to your quality of life - but there comes a time when that quality is worth far more than the Saudi dollar and the burnout it comes with.. Seller beware...

Right. The golden age for expats in SA has come and gone. There has been a slow and steady erosion of all the small bennies that made that kind of life change attractive. IMO it can still be lucrative if approached in the correct mindset, but that mindset introduces reductions to quality of life...somewhat. And furthermore, they have spent big bucks to bring on their own citizens for all those choice jobs, as they should, so keep in mind that you will come across many individuals who openly talk and act as if they don't want your kind there. I wish all who brave it, good luck.
