Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Question for ATT employees

I need a favor. I was laid off by att, I went through anger etc. But now I think they did me a favor, I learned a lot since. I now realize I was stagnating, just "phoning" it in. I landed somewhere else but unfortunately that did not work out either so I am currently looking. I have had a lot of interviews with telco companies and others. No offers yet. I was recently interviewed by ATT, the position looks good (dont they all, lol). If offered I intend to counter with a few things that I want including immediate service bridging (this is non-negotiable, i dont want it in 1 year, or even 6 months, I want it day 1, if i dont work out and they can me for cause, they loose nothing)
The favor I need is for the existing ATT employee, how much time off (non sick) does a 25 year employee get? I heard they change it since I left. Is it one "bucket" of all non sick time off?

OP here, so I was offered a gig at ATT, I appreciated it but I declined as I had already been offered a role somewhere else that I believe overall was superior to the ATT role. All the best to the folks who remain at att. When I was there it was somewhat toxic in my area but not as bad as some reports on this board. Take care all.

" Like another poster said, no service bridging in management. "

Completely erroneous.

I personally know 2 L2's laid off in last 3 years, hired back in last few months into new management roles at same salary they left with their service time completely bridged.

Now, why folks are concerned about bridging time for management I don't really get, as it's essentially meaningless at this point.

a 25 year management employee would have 28 days of PTO plus 9 paid holidays

You may be eligible for a wire tech position if you can pass qualification and physical exams. Good luck

there 100% is service bridging for management employees. I know 4 people who left the company and came back after 12+ months and their NCS was retained

for management: 28 vacation days, ~11 holidays, 15 days to care for family members, unlimited sick time when you're exempt/ non-exempt is limited. Also a benefit for personal days off for doctor appointments for yourself, etc

Like another poster said, no service bridging in management. Nobody in management cares because seniority is a union thing. Sounds like you were union and left the company (voluntarily/involuntarily) and now you want back in because you don’t have a transferable skill set to jobs in the real world so you kind find employment equivalent to the Cadillac union job you had before.

Woah! A little triggered there OP! Maybe AT&T is perfect for you. By all means, return to the cesspool that you seem to miss so much.

I always said att treat their employees like abused spouses. they cannot imagine living in any other place but with the spouse that is abusing them. it is psychological trauma especially when there are so many better places to work that don't have layoffs in their vocabulary.

No matter how you think it was your fault I would not recommend going back and go get some help. I do not say the jokingly. att screwed your over and abused you and have you thinking it was all your fault. trust me it wasn't.
I say this with all seriousness please get some help before you decide to go back. There really are a lot of much better places to work that pay for your education. you can do all those things you want to do at another company too.

for t hose wondering why I would return to ATT, my job atmosphere was not as toxic as some have Sid theirs were here. Sure I had stopped growing intellectually but that was my fault not the company. I because lazy intellectually. Thats not the company’s fault, its mine. There is no excuse for me no not be learning more, the company provided tuition reimbursement I could have gone and gotten another masters and moved to another team. That was on me. I had a terrible manager between 2016/2017, but even under that id--t I still could have progressed. Nothing stopped me. I worked from home exclusively from 2012 to when I left. I had time. I did not have a lot to do during the day, I hardly worked at night or early am (before 6 am) or on weekends. I got along very well with my colleagues. THats not to say if I had continued learning that would have saved my job. FOr all the complaints about T, almost all companies have some or all of the same issues. Name me companies that dont have some toxic environment? VZ, please I was there they are a mess internally not able to deliver simple services on time in many cases, VZB is declining, VZW is betting on 5g and Fixed wireless, their MPLS business ideas declining due to technologies like SDWAN and SASE which dont need expensive MPLS circuits. Given the choice between one company which I am waiting for an offer from and T, I would go that other company in heartbeat over T, but if T is the only game and the package is not bad, I would take it. But lessons learned for me. I will go back and do that cybersecurity masters and have them pay for it.

Build that bridge and come on back!As long as you aren’t one of those people that waste company time and money, like spending 3 hours a day surfing online or downing jobs so you can sit until another dispatch or not being productive at all!If you want to work and make a positive difference then we need you!

No offense, but you must have some serious psychological issues if you want to return to an environment like AT&T. Sure it's a paycheck and some benefits, but at what cost to your physical and emotional health and personal dignity?

Do some serious soul searching and ask yourself why you would want to return here? With your experience and credentials there is no excuse for not building a better life elsewhere. It's always difficult and uncomfortable to step out into a new environment and start over. But so worth it.

It is most definitely possible to find a better employer with better compensation and working conditions. I have NEVER had any desire to return to AT&T since leaving.

As a current AT&T employee and shareholder (funny stuff, I know), please expand your list of demands to: doubling your existing service and $100K signing bonus. No way AT&T wants to "loose" out on the opportunity to rehire you.

To answer a few questions. Yes I did look in the mirror and it found be me, but it could also be “bad luck” right? We will see, I know of people who have been through what I am going through and they were very good engineers and great attitudes, they got along with most people so it was not attitude or skill why they lost jobs multiple times. thanks for the information on the 28 days. I am negotiating with a company right now and they give roughly 17 days (15 PTO, 2 floater and one at company discretion, they do give 11 fixed holidays too). If I get offers from them and ATT, i would choose them as they give RSUs. At my last place I git RSUs and they are sweet. NO downside at all except you have to be there during vesting period to get it, but its cash in a brokerage account (net taxes). Yeah I know T stinks but a job is a job. It’s better to have one than not right? And all my years at T I was actually not unhappy, i wish things were different in certain areas and hated that I got pushed out but other engineers who are as good or even much better than I was/am also lost their jobs there. We were on the dying side of T. The other place I went is also dying thats why I prefer not to go back to T, not even to Mobility. But as I said I do need a job, got bills to pay and not yet able to retire.

I can speak to the mgt time off. I retired at the end of 3Q21. We used to get 33 vacation days (they lumped vacation and personal days into one bucket) but it changed in 2021 to 28 days (they gave us 3 additional company holidays so the net loss was 2 days).

T rehiring so many former employees is one reason the company is in its current state of disrepair

You can't be serious. You were laid off at att, the next job didn't work out, you've had interviews but no offers, you had to go back to att, sounds like you need to look in the mirror and take a good look at yourself.

You got to be kidding even thinking of applying for any job at Toxic-T. Didn't you get the message?

"Thank you sir! May I have another?" Do you like abuse?

Get your head on straight. You are rid of T - don't go back for more of the Stink!

What do you think you will get out of service bridging? When did you join the company initially and how much service did you have? Did you start early enough to get the pension. Because that is really the only reason to hold out for bridging at this point. The insurance for retirees went away at the end of 2021. Basically you max out at 28 days of vacation vs the previous 33. They did add 3 paid holidays (MLK, Presidents Day and Day after Thanksgiving). But, I believe you max out vacation now after 10 or 15 years(I cannot remember). The vacation time policy was definitely adjusted to favor younger employees. If you really need a job and going back to T looks promising, then I'd be careful about making the service bridging a show-stopper.
