Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

The company is basically telling us: Don’t work hard

I told myself a million times I will do only the bare minimum, but to be honest I never could do that. I just can’t live with myself is I don’t give it my best and put in a good day's work. What did I get? Nothing. A raise and a promotion is in the domain of wishful thinking and I'm constantly in fear of being laid off.
On the other hand the ones that really do the bare minimum don’t seem to have a problem in advancing. That just tells the sad story of the present culture at the company, or to be more precise, the lack of it.

Hmmm, sounds like you are already a Principal, Lead, or equivalent. You’re alright.

My own personal ethics are such that I believe in doing an honest day's work, because I am getting paid to do that. I am at the stage of my career where I don't worry too much about raises, promotions, or getting laid off. I realize that outlook may not apply to many other people. I truly do like the work that I do, and I work very hard to stay up to date technically, so getting laid off is something I view as low risk. Not low risk from the perspective of keeping my job at AT&T, but low risk because my area of expertise and skills are extremely marketable outside of AT&T. Honestly, I am not pursuing any levels of advancement, because I want to keep being technical and be as good at that as I can be, since I really do enjoy it. I want to minimize my involvement in corporate politics and have absolutely no interest in taking on a role involving management of people (although I love mentoring others in my chosen areas of expertise).

Yep, it’s you. If your goal is raise and promotion, working hard is not the way to get it. Learn how the game is played!
